Stephen King: Maine Governor Is A ‘Bigot, A Homophobe, And A Racist’

Novelist Stephen King called Maine Gov. Paul LePage (R) a “bigot, homophobe and a racist” on Saturday, after a week in which the governor made several inflammatory remarks.

King, who is a longtime Maine resident, sent the tweet after the governor used a homophobic slur against a Democratic lawmaker because he believed the man had called him a racist.

Earlier in the week, LePage said he keeps a binder filled with mugshots of everyone who had been arrested for dealing drugs in the state, and that more than 90 percent of the people in it were black or Hispanic. Ninety-five percent of Maine residents are white, according to U.S. Census data.

On Friday, the governor denied that police were engaging in racial profiling in arrests for drug dealing, and called people of color and Hispanics “the enemy.”

Last year, LePage accused King of leaving the state to avoid taxes ― a claim that wasn’t true. King said that LePage should “man up and apologize” to him, but the governor refused.

Thought-Provoking Questions

Often, when I am booked for lectures or radio and television interviews, I am provided questions in advance to help me prepare. Some of the questions are provocative, the kind that make me stop and think. So much so, I am sharing a few here with my replies.

1. What are three principles you live by?
a) “Identify the fear and then go there.” Usually I’m afraid because it is something I have never done before, and so I figure I will at least learn something new. I always ask myself: What is the worst-case scenario? If it’s one I can deal with, I go for it.
b) “Not everything worth doing is worth doing well.” Being stuck striving for perfection will not allow you to move on. For me, this pertains to writing. It is never finished and can always be improved upon. But at some point, it must be abandoned. Of course, this does not apply to everything; be sure to use discernment.
c) “Maintain an open mind.” I try to not be judgmental or assume that I know best. I listen and attempt to understand other points of view, seeing them in the contexts of culture and personality. When presented with a new opportunity, I ask myself: Will I learn something?

2. Do you believe nature or nurture has more impact?
People are born with specific tendencies; some children are shy, some are outgoing. This is a natural component of our genes, but then life experiences also impact our brains. Successes can reinforce behavior while failures discourage future attempts. So it is both. First it is nature, then nurture. Both have an equal influence.

3. What do you wish you knew then that you know now?
I wish I had not cared so much about what other people thought of me. As women, we try to please others more than necessary. Speak the truth as often as possible and be willing to be disliked, but respected.

4. What did you wish to be when you were a child?
My childhood dream was to be a poet. I won a poetry contest for a poem I wrote when I was eight. This early success inspired me to continue writing poems, which I still do today.

5. What role does luck play in success?
Obviously, luck plays a part–you have to be at the right place, at the right time, with the right people. However, success is also “opportunity meeting preparation.” I am always scanning my environment to look for ways to make a contribution and a difference.

6. What are the barriers to female leadership?
“MEN!” There is still gender discrimination, both conscious and unconscious, even by well-meaning men. Our culture continues to be dominated by male values, and, in the majority of cases, even when shown the same resume with a male or female name, men are chosen over women for both promotions and as new hires.

7. What was your biggest challenge?
a) Acceptance. As the only woman on the faculty of a business school, the first woman in a Rotary Club, the only female consultant in all-male organizations, I faced issues of acceptance. I did not try to blend in, as I knew this was not possible, so I stood out by wearing red suits, sitting on the arms of chairs to make me look taller (I am barely 5 feet tall).
b) A close second was being ignored–not only feeling invisible, but, also, not heard, and (when earned) not rewarded.

8. What changes in the workplace would you like to see?
I would like to see flexible working hours as a norm at work. This would permit time off not only for child-related needs, but, also, for the increasing needs of aging parents. Men must be provided with the same opportunity to take an equal share of these responsibilities without negative consequences in the workplace. What do you attribute your success to?
The willingness to ask the first question, using an assertive voice, looking others in the eye while conversing, giving credit when credit is due, looking and sounding confident (even when I do not feel that way), being well-prepared by knowing the agenda and relevant facts, and lastly, believing in myself.

9. What are the three rules you live by?
a) First of all, have fun. b) Do no harm. c) Be as helpful to as many people as possible.
I am urging you, my readers, to do the same. Think of each question as it relates to you, your values, philosophies, experiences, your life overall. Take time to answer these questions honestly and you might gain new insights–perhaps discover some unconscious motivations.

Here’s What Parents Of Kids With Life-Threatening Allergies Think Of The EpiPen Price Increases

Jennifer DiMercurio’s 7-year-old son, Liam, relies on the EpiPen, an auto injector used to treat anaphylactic shock, to save his life in the case of a severe allergic reaction. The device delivers a dose of epinephrine that’s worth about $ 1. But over the past nine years, Mylan, the pharmaceutical company which makes the EpiPen, has increased the price of the patented injecting device from $ 100 to $ 600.

That increase put the DiMercurios in a bind. In January 2015, DiMercurio’s husband started a new job that didn’t include health insurance. The family turned to the private market, where they found a plan that would cover Liam and Jennifer, who had developed a Latex allergy ― but it had a hefty deductible. So on two occasions, after using up their stash to save each others’ lives, the family had to borrow funds from relatives to replace their EpiPens.

This summer, DiMercurio’s husband started a new job ― one that came with good health insurance. But the family couldn’t afford to buy the year’s EpiPens until the new insurance kicked in.

So for four months, they had to rely on expired models.

“I was scared to take my son out, especially as summer was coming ― even at the grocery store I’d be more worried and more on alert because I’ll be afraid,” DiMercurio said. “Especially having to use them myself I’ve seen now how important it is to use it quickly and how fast it happens, and you don’t know if your pen is going to work because it’s expired.”

Presidential candidates, politicians and the press have spent the past week slamming Mylan for the price increases. Since no rival generic products have Food and Drug Administration approval, Mylan has an almost complete monopoly. Mylan’s CEO Heather Bresch, who is the daughter of Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), announced Thursday that the company would not cut the price of the injectors, but would increase the maximum it would offer to families in its copay assistance program from $ 100 to $ 300.

Parents of children with life-threatening allergies are still worried.

“So many of us are wondering if we’re going to be able to pay our mortgage if we pay for the pens,” DiMercurio said. “It’s bad enough when kids’ lives are lost just because they didn’t use an EpiPen quickly enough, but to not have it for a financial reason is despicable. It’s all we have and Mylan monopolized the market.”

FINANCIAL SACRIFICE

Aleasa Word, a working single mom in Atlanta, started saving last September to buy enough EpiPens for her two kids with food allergies to make it through the school year. The packs expire, so they need to be replaced each year, even if they aren’t used. Even with her insurance, a two-pack of EpiPens (they’re only sold in sets of two) costs her about $ 600, and she needs four packs to cover both her children ― one for each of them to carry, and one for each of them to have at school.

That comes out to a total of $ 2,400.

“I am willing to sacrifice whatever I need to sacrifice to get my children their medication,” Word said. “EpiPen is not optional in my house. I can’t not have it.”

Joy Velozo, a mother from Massachusetts, said she worries about the impact the price increase has on families that can no longer afford them. Her son, who will be 12 at the end of the month, is allergic to all nuts, eggs and shellfish. He has been home-schooled since last year in part because his local school would not guarantee that he would not be exposed to allergens in the upper classes, where students switch desks and classrooms throughout the day.

“I can’t imagine having to pay full price to have four sets of EpiPens to know he was covered in every situation,” she said.

Julianne DeNicola’s 7-year-old son, Joseph, died after he came into contact with pizza oil that had touched cheese ― enough to set off his extreme dairy allergy. Although his father administered an EpiPen shortly after his reaction, Joseph didn’t get the drug fast enough.

“This isn’t just an over-the-counter product,” DeNicola said. “This is Russian Roulette. You can’t put a price tag on life.”

DeNicola said she has talked to other parents who say they have been forced to choose between a mortgage payment, putting aside money for college tuition, or buying a new set of EpiPens.

RISING RISKS

Other parents told HuffPost they’d heard of families splitting packs ― one EpiPen for home, one to carry ― as the cost of EpiPens has risen. This is dangerous. EpiPens are sold in packs of two in case someone needs more than one dose or the first EpiPen fails to deploy due to user error.

The possibility that more families could end up splitting the EpiPen packs terrifies Georgina Cornago Cipriano. She became an food allergy activist after her 14-year-old son, Giovanni, accidentally ingested something with peanuts and died.

“It’s becoming a luxury to be able to have an EpiPen. There are people that have multiple children with food allergies ― how can you afford them?” Cipriano asked. “You have to have more than one set. And you have to have two everywhere you go ― you never know if the first one could malfunction. You don’t know if the first one is going to be enough.”

When asked about families splitting the packs, DiMercurio said that she once had to use two of the EpiPens at the same time on her own son to get his reaction under control. But she’s had to rely on expired pens herself, so she understands the inclination to cut corners for cost.

THE NECESSITY FOR ACCESS

In September 2013, Josephine Espinosa’s 13-year-old son Cameron was bitten by a swarm of fire ants during a football huddle in Corpus Christi, Texas. He’d had no previous allergy issues ― much like 25 percent of children who suffer their first allergic reaction in school ― but the mix of ant bites and adrenaline caused a severe allergic reaction that killed him.

The school did not have an EpiPen on hand, which Josephine believes could have saved his life.

“Once I found out an EpiPen could have saved my son, I knew I had to do something so that other parents don’t have to go through what we go through every day,” Espinosa said.

Last summer, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) signed Senate Bill 66, known as the Cameron Espinosa Act, into law, which requires public and charter schools in Texas to stock EpiPens and train staff on how to use them. Last school year was the first the law went into effect.

“It does give me a little peace of mind that [this is the law in Texas],” Espinosa said. “This is a nightmare, every day is a struggle. No parent should have to go through that.”

Eleven states in the country require all schools to carry EpiPens. The law in Texas does not apply to private schools.

Many emergency vehicles do not carry EpiPens or epinephrine on board. And many basic emergency medical technicians do not have access or may not be allowed to administer anything other than the patient’s own EpiPen, according to Food Allergy Research & Education, a nonprofit that advocates for the 15 million Americans who suffer from food allergies.

THE FEAR NEVER GOES AWAY

Parents of children with food allergies wonder every day if they’re going to get a phone call saying their child is having a life-threatening reaction, Velozo said.

The parents of those who have lost a child “are like the salespeople for EpiPens,” DeNicola said. “We’re the advocates on why they need to have it.”

“We walk on land mines every single day,” said Word, who organizes Love Remembers Day, an annual commemoration for those who have lost a loved one to food-induced anaphylaxis.

“I hate to get the phone call, I hate to get the emails,” she said. “And I don’t want to have a conversation on Love Remembers Day, and it’s because someone couldn’t afford their EpiPen.”

India should seize the opportunity

Dr. Nehginpao Kipgen

Myanmar President Htin Kyaw begins a four-day trip to India beginning August 27. This is the president’s first State visit to India and will be accompanied by his wife, Daw Su Su Lwin, several key ministers and senior officials.

President Kyaw comes to India at the invitation of the Indian President, Pranab Mukherjee, who will be hosting a banquet in honor of the visiting leader and his delegation.

During his visit, President Kyaw will have official engagements in New Delhi and also visit places of historical and cultural importance. The visit is expected to strengthen and expand ties between the two countries.

The visit comes four days after External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj paid a one-day visit to the Southeast Asian nation on August 22. It was India’s first high-level visit to the neighboring country since the National League for Democracy (NLD) came to power.

During the visit, leaders of the Myanmar government told Swaraj that they would not allow any insurgent group to use Myanmar’s territory against India. In return, Swaraj offered all possible help to the new Myanmar government.

Swaraj’s visit happened just days after the Indian Army had an encounter with the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K) militants along the India-Myanmar border. There were reports that the Indian army crossed over to Myanmar territory to pursue the militants but it was denied by New Delhi.

President Kyaw’s visit is important for the Indian leadership to engage in substantive talks on cross-border security issue and others.

The timing of the visit is good for both New Delhi and Nay Pyi Taw as the NLD government currently engages in holding talks with several ethnic armed groups of the country.

One major goal of President Kyaw’s government is to end decades of armed conflicts in Myanmar, which is considered the longest in the world, by holding the 21st Panglong Conference starting August 31.

Though the NSCN-K is currently not engaged in talks with the Myanmar government, the Modi government could use this visit to talk about the group.

President Kyaw’s visit also comes five days after Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s state counselor and de-facto leader, paid a four-day visit to China, a traditional rival of India.

During the visit, the two countries signed agreements on economic and technological cooperation, among others, that will result in the building of two new hospitals and a strategic bridge in Kunlong, 32 kilometers from the Chinese border in northeastern Myanmar.

Another important issue of bilateral talk was on trade and investment. China is Myanmar’s largest trading partner with total two-way trade amounting to $ 15.6 billion in 2015. In an effort to improve bilateral ties, Myanmar has agreed to review the several dam projects invested by China, including the $ 3.6 billion Myitsone dam, and find a mutually agreeable solution.

The Chinese leadership assured the state counselor that Beijing would continue to play a constructive role in promoting a peaceful settlement to the decades-old armed conflicts in Myanmar.

In light of these developments, India, which is the world’s largest democracy, should seize the opportunity of President Kyaw’s visit to strengthen and enhance bilateral relations.

Besides the cross-border security issue, the three areas where India needs to focus are the education sector, institution-building and people-to-people relations.

First, the Indian government has taken initiatives such as the establishment of Language Laboratories and Resource Centre, the Myanmar Institute of Information Technology, and the Agricultural Research and Educational Centre, and the enhancement of the India-Myanmar Centre for Enhancement of IT Skills.

But few students from Myanmar, if any, attend Indian universities. The Indian government and educational institutions across India should do more to attract students from Myanmar, perhaps by offering scholarships or through exchange programs. Additionally, civil society organizations and the private sector should offer vocational trainings for short-term results.

Second is institution building which can be done in a number of ways. For example, the Indian government should invite Myanmar politicians who are new to democracy to give them first-hand experience as to how democracy works in a diverse and pluralistic society.

Myanmar politicians should be allowed to observe parliamentary proceedings, or attend courses offered by Indian universities and think-tanks on the theory and practice of democracy and federalism.

Third is improving people-to-people relations. Not only do India and Myanmar have a shared border but the two countries are also home to millions of people from the same ethnic community, separated during the creation of India and Myanmar in 1947 and 1948 respectively. Examples are the Kachin, the Kuki, the Naga and the Shan, who live side by side along the India-Myanmar border.

Moreover, the two countries share about 1624-kilometre boundary in four Northeast Indian states – Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland. But despite this geographical proximity, cross-border contacts among the ordinary people are relatively insignificant. During Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Myanmar in 2014, India agreed to build 71 bridges along the roads used by Indian buses.

Bus service between Imphal and Mandalay, a distance of about 580 kilometers, was originally planned to start in 2012-2013 but Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh launched it only on December 9, 2015 as a trial run, which has not been resumed since then.

Similarly, the first flight service between Myanmar and Manipur was introduced in November 2013, but the service was not continued because of immigration and other issues. Though weekly direct Air India flights on the Delhi-Gaya-Yangon route and Golden Myanma charter flights to India were launched in November 2014, the connectivity between the two countries still remain very poor.

Reliable road links, bus and train services, the introduction of visa-on-arrival facilities at the border, regular flights and the improvement of people-to-people relations are some key areas the Indian government should prioritize for the success of its Act East Policy.

Dr. Nehginpao Kipgen is Assistant Professor and Executive Director of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Jindal School of International Affairs, O.P. Jindal Global University. His writings (books and articles) have been widely published in over 30 countries in five continents – Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe, and North America.

In Silence I Heard A Voice, It Was My Own

I’ve had the good fortune recently to have a great deal of space and time to myself living out in the country. If “time is money” in the city, then the country is Fort Knox. Things move slower out here where things like the brute tango between a rooster and his chickens serves as entertainment. Living with nature has given me the luxury of a much needed step back from the incessant demands of life back in the city. I’ve been able to reassess my priorities, and recalibrate the value I assign to the people, places and things in my life. It’s remarkable how an open, natural setting after a long stint in a crowded city can reground us. I can actually hear myself think out here. For the first time, in a long while, I’m listening to my inner voice again.

Some of us have had the luxury of a much needed vacation on a remote beach somewhere, where there is nothing but empty space and time to indulge on our own inner voice. We get stressed and need vacations precisely because our daily demands too often do not align with that voice. Then, usually towards the end of the vacation, when we can finally hear ourselves think again, we resolve to keep that inner dialogue going when we get back home — only to lose it before lunch on the first day at the office. We may even hear this voice from time to time outside of vacations, but it seems to surface just in time for our phone, buzzing with a notification, to let us know what we should really be thinking about.

We each have a unique voice within us that originates from the natural flow of what’s happening in each moment. It isn’t the voice that imposes the ego’s expectations on life. Instead, it gives us brilliant insights to life’s biggest challenges, while serving the highest good. That is, if we can even hear the voice to begin with. You see, the voice that offers the best guidance doesn’t scream at us or demand that we listen to it. It doesn’t interrupt or boast like an advertisement or a salesman, trying to convince us that we don’t already have everything we need. It’s a quiet, humble voice. It doesn’t tell you to get more things, instead it helps you to let things go.

Stripping away the excesses that drown out our inner voice comes from living cleanly and simply. If you’ve ever done a cleansing diet that removes solid food for a time, you know the life-changing benefits of having a clean gut. Once clean, we can add foods back into to our diets one at a time so that we can more accurately identify the ones that cause us problems. It’s the same with our stomachs as it is with our minds. To truly thrive, we must set aside enough time to cleanse our thoughts. Only then can the smog of fear dissipate from our minds. And then, when we’re ready based on our own needs, we can rebuild by adding things back in one at a time. Without this process of deep cleansing for our minds, we might never find what’s holding us back from realizing our life’s true purpose.

My heartfelt wish is that every one of you and the people you care about can find a way to create the space and time you need to hear and heed your own inner voice. I know it feels impossible sometimes. But when things are the craziest is when we most need to take a step back and reassess. We don’t need more people selling us solutions to our problems, we have no shortage of that. What we need are more ways to help ourselves find enough silence to hear our own voices again. I found mine out in the country and it said to write this post. Where will you find yours?

THE DOCTOR IS IN! Philanthropist Medicine Man DOCTOR MIKE Helps Raise Awareness And Funds For Breast Cancer With THE SUSAN G. KOMEN GREATER NYC RACE FOR THE CURE!

With breast cancer being unfortunately the second leading cause of death for women in the United States, and the statistics for the illness sadly being so high, it seems as though everyone can say they know someone who has suffered from breast cancer. But, not everyone can say they know a ridiculously handsome, intelligent and charming doctor that is so dedicated to the cause and that actually cares– if they could, mothers would be lining up to meet them so that they could introduce this catch to their daughters! And that’s where Doctor Mike comes in.

Dr. Mikhail Varshavski, also known as “Doctor Mike,” is a third year medicine resident focusing on family and sports care in Overlook Medical Center in Summit, NJ. Having come to Brooklyn, NY from Russia at six years old, Doctor Mike watched his parents with wide eyes as his father attended medical school and his mother swept floors to make ends meet. The handsome young doctor’s dedication to medicine only increased when he was inspired by the relationships between his father and his patients. When Doctor Mike lost his mother to CLL during his first year of medical school, he only became more passionate to help others, vigorously pushing himself to finish up his studies.

A contributor to several popular online publications, and having been published in esteemed research journals, Doctor Mike has already branched out past medicine and used the world of social media to do good in the world. A powerful entrepreneur and an extremely kind philanthropist, this brilliant and beautiful healer has managed to use his platform to spread awareness and educate others on how to keep themselves and others healthy. Not only is Doctor Mike involved in several organizations, he even launched his own charity; The Limitless Tomorrow Foundation, which seeks to empower candidates to reach their full potential and overcome hardships.

And of course, another organization that Doctor Mike is a part of and that he is very passionate about is the Susan G. Komen foundation. With September being breast cancer awareness month and the illness being a diagnosis everyone should know about, the Race For The Cure in Central Park is the perfect fundraising opportunity to help out a good cause- and it’s no surprise that Doctor Mike is taking part!

With a heart so warm it could melt the arctic, looks so good they could put any top model to shame, and a brain so innovative that it could lead to revolutionary discoveries in medicine, it would be great to see Doctor Mike get his own show! Luckily, the impressive doctor agreed to an appointment for an interview to talk all about all the wonderful things he has coming up, how to get involved, and how to see him!

So, you are going to be at the Susan G. Komen Greater NYC 5k race/walk in Central Park. Can you talk about the race a little bit and why it’s important people come out for it, and why it’s also important that people get checked for breast cancer?

The event is a yearly event that Susan G. Komen hosts in central park in New York City to not only raise awareness for breast cancer and the illness, but also to raise funds for research and to help out those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, as well as their families. I’m a family doctor and a big part of what I do is preventative care, and breast cancer is one of the illnesses that women suffer from greatly in this country. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. It’s also the number two leading cause of death in the United States for women, and it’s a preventable cause of death- which is something I’m incredibly passionate about, and the reason for that is because it can be prevented with simple checks; like a breast exam combined with mammogram. And women aren’t fully aware of what is going on, nor are their families. There are still a lot of misconceptions out there, and I think that the Susan G. Komen foundation does a great job of educating women about breast cancer, as well as educating the general public about the illness and the current treatments we have out there, and frankly we need more research in the field to see what’s appropriate and what could be done better, and the way that we do that is by raising funds. So, the Susan G. Komen foundation is really a great organization for that, and I thought it would be the perfect foundation for me to get involved with.

And not only women are at risk for breast cancer, but men are at risk also. Can you go into detail on that, and why it’s important for men to show up to get checked?

Men are at risk for breast cancer as well, that’s absolutely true. 1-2% of breast cancers are related to men. So, if men do feel something abnormal on their bodies, it is very important they share that with their primary care doctors. It’s a disease with a lot of speculation surrounding the illness where people think that we’re over-screening, or over-checking, but really the importance of catching the diagnosis early outweighs any negativity that might come along with the notion of doing too much screening. But, in general, I do believe we need more research, and the way we get that done is by raising awareness and raising funds through events just like this one.

When did you know that you wanted to be a doctor and that you wanted to help people?

So, originally I was in high school and I was studying biology and I got really interested in the field of medicine. And then, I got a lot of early exposure to it because my father’s a physician and I saw the relationship that he had with his patients, and it was something that drew my attention to how wonderful the field was. The patients that came into his office weren’t his clients, he didn’t have duties to his clients in the way that others had duties to their shareholders like other professionals, but he had a duty to these people who trusted him with their lives, and he became their friend. They would come to him for advice. They trusted him with their lives and the lives of their loved ones- and I really fell in love with that sort of relationship. I loved that continuity where you could follow someone throughout their life and see how they change from childhood to adulthood to the elderly, and you get to see how the progression of life changes. To help someone as they go through life is wonderful not just on the medical standpoint, but on the psychological standpoint as well, and I fell in love with the field of medicine that way, and I thought that my communication skills were a great fit for building these relationships with patients so that they can divulge more of their information on what ails them and we can make a better educated decision together on how to help them, and furthermore be able to educate them about their illness.

And where can people go in order to schedule an appointment with you if they want to get an appointment with Doctor Mike?

I work at Overlook Medical Center in Summit, New Jersey, and they have a family medicine center that is fantastic. You can call our office, it’s listed right on the internet at the website; http://www.atlantichealth.org/overlook/ and you can schedule an appointment with me. We can do a preventative health visit, so there’s no need to actually be sick in order to come see me. It’s just as important to maintain your health as it is to see a doctor when you’re already sick.

Being that this September is breast cancer awareness month, how else can people get involved in helping raise funds or awareness for the cause?

Primarily, the greatest way to get involved is to partner up with a great foundation like Susan G. Komen Foundation that already has the outlets in order to get the most reach possible. So, volunteering for an event like the 5K walk in Central Park is amazing because this is a huge event and we need a lot of help with it. Raising funds is a great help you can help by simply asking your family members, or co-workers for a few dollars and maybe making the event in someone’s memory to someone you lost to breast cancer or someone you know that is suffering, as it would be a great way to remember them or help them fight the ongoing battle, because we’ve all known someone that’s had the illness.

Unfortunately, Doctor Mike is right again- the prevalence of breast cancer is too high and everyone does know someone that has suffered. And by getting involved in the Susan G. Komen 5K walk, not only will participants get to support those that they know that have been diagnosed with the illness, they will also get the chance to meet Dr. Mike, learn more about to help, and learn more about how to take preventative care for themselves in the future. I think the world just found a new Dr. McDreamy!

A Gift For You: Walk In The Woods Meditation

2016-08-25-1472151034-8505504-WalkintheWoods.JPG
After decades of practicing meditation, four years of teaching happiness meditation classes and workshops, and now leading weekend retreats, I finally wrote my own guided meditation, “A Walk in the Woods.” Being in nature makes us happy, but it isn’t always possible to physically be outside drinking up the sights, sounds, and smells of a wooded trail. We can, however, savor the forest sensations mindfully by taking the time to mentally create or recreate that experience in as much detail as possible.

I was inspired by the local Trails Committee and by the transformative Helen Keller essay, Three Days to See. With gratitude to them, I offer the following meditation to you. Please make it your own. I’ve based the meditation on a summer walk in the Vermont woods, but your walk may be in the fall, spring or winter, on a real or imaginary trail. Create or recreate the experience that best suits you. The following is more a series of suggestions than a road map.

A Walk in the Woods

I invite you to start by easing into your meditation practice. With your eyes closed, let your breath out with an audible sigh. Do this several times if you like. Take a moment to notice all the places your body is in contact with the floor, chair, or cushions. Appreciate the support of the furniture and the building you are in, as well as the strength of the earth, making it safe for you to relax into your meditation time. Next, in an easy gentle fashion, focus on your breath, for a few minutes, until you feel ready to proceed. Take as much time with this transition as you want.

When you are ready, imagine you are at the trail head, ready to step in among the trees. Before you begin your walk, take time for gratitude. You may be grateful to have an able body. You might thank those who built the trail, or the landowners who share their property with the public. Perhaps your gratitude is for the weather, or for a strong pair of sneakers and good socks. What are you grateful for? Again, take your time. There is no need to hurry.

Remember to breathe.

Now, stepping into the woods, where do your feet land? What does the trail look like? Are there trail blazes or other markers on the trees? Who made them? Are there roots or rocks you might stumble over? Fallen branches? Are ferns or maybe even poison ivy growing near the trail? Is it a sunny day? What kinds of patterns does the play of light through the tree canopy make? Look around, what can you really see?

When we practice mindfulness, we can try to use all our senses. Right now, for example, what do you hear in your own little forest? Maybe leaves crunching underfoot? Or birds — is there a variety of bird calls if you really listen? Is it a still day, or is a breeze blowing? What does that sound like? Other animals? Insects whirring by your ear or chirping from afar? Maybe even traffic or construction noises off in the distance? Mindfulness is about more than appreciating beauty — it is, deeply observing what truly is.

Still breathing?

What does the air smell like? Did it rain recently? Are there rotting logs nearby? Do you smell your own shampoo, or toothpaste? Maybe there are flowers, or berries — do you want to lean in and breathe in their aroma?

And touch — is the air on your arms and face cool from the shade, or is it a hot sultry day even in the woods?

Even taste — did you bring a water bottle along? What does the water taste like? Any leftover meal flavors still lingering in your mouth? Did you pick a berry to eat? Was it sweet, sour, overripe?

Breathing deeper now, and looking more carefully around you. You’re surrounded by trees, but what species? Have any blown over, from the wind or maybe lightning? What bark do you see around you? Patterns? Growths on trees? Any holes in the trees? Perhaps holes made by animals, or perfect for animals to crawl into. And of course the leaves, or pine needles — different shapes, various shades of green? Are there also browns, and reds — trees in distress, or maybe autumn is coming on. It’s time to see the trees themselves, not just the forest. Are there any very old trees? Or very young ones? Any competing for the sunlight? What else?

Where would we be without trees? Can you feel gratitude for them?

Still remembering to breathe, turn now to the rocks and stones. Do you see ledge, or quartz? What sizes — boulders? Pebbles? Do you have to climb over any rocks? Are they moss-covered? Sharp, rounded? Maybe you can even spot one that is heart shaped.

Now we’re walking next to a mountain brook. Is your brook full and flowing forcefully? Maybe it just rained? Or is it late summer, with only a trickle? Pause and put your hand in. How cold is it? What does the brook sound like? What patterns do you see, in the way the water falls, and on the rocks below the surface? Linger by the brook as long as you’d like.

When you’re ready, notice that the trail is going up hill. What are the sensations in your muscles? Are you winded? Sweaty? Thirsty? How is your body doing on this hike? Or is it more of an easy going walk for you? Even on this mental journey, can you listen to your body’s experience?

In this moment, we’ve stepped out of the woods into a meadow. It may be sunny, or overcast. Is it hotter? Or is there a wind blowing, making your skin cooler? Looking up, what do you see in the skies? Have the sounds in the meadow changed from those in the woods? And sights — perhaps here you might see butterflies. What else is different on this part of the walk?

Finally we’ve arrived at an overlook, where conveniently there’s a bench to sit on and savor the view. What do you see? A lake in the distance? Mountains? A city? Is the view awe-inspiring? Does the larger vista give you a sense of place in the world, maybe putting your own cares in perspective? Can you pay attention to your feelings as well as the view? Just accepting your feelings, not trying to change them or judge them in any way.

Spend as long as you want sitting on the bench, taking in whatever is present for you in this moment.

Finally, let’s end this meditation the way we began: with gratitude. Grateful perhaps for beauty, for public policies that have preserved park land, for your own self to take this time to flex your mindfulness muscles and nurture your connection with the natural world. Who and what are you grateful for?

When you are ready, open your eyes and gently return to your regularly scheduled programming.

Feminist Artist Makes Women’s Bushes Bloom In Surreal Tribute To Mothers

When photographer Alexandra Sophie became pregnant, the way she viewed her body changed entirely.

“I felt like a seed was planted in a personal garden,” she explained in an email to The Huffington Post, “and it was growing each day until the clock would ring and the baby would know when he is ready to see the world.”

More unimaginable yet was the fact that such a miracle, at once surreal and commonplace, was happening so many times a day on all corners of the earth ― according to UNICEF, approximately 353,000 babies are born every day around the world.

Inspired by the powers of her own body, along with those of the many women around her both strangers and friends, Sophie embarked on a photography series titled “Blooming Garden.” Although the images pay homage to all the areas of resilience and vulnerability housed within a woman’s form, she photographs one region in particular.

The first photograph in the series, also titled “Blooming Garden,” visualized the fantastical sensation of containing within oneself the power to create, nourish, blossom and give birth. The simple and striking image, shot from above, depicts a rose, a daisy, various grasses and mossy patches adorning a woman’s pelvis.

To Sophie, this image represented motherhood, and specifically, the power of a woman’s body to bring life into the world. She soon realized, however, that her “Blooming Garden” represented one aspect of womanhood out of myriad possibilities ― some joyous, some strange, some painful and some taboo.

“At first, I simply wanted [the project] to depict my personal feelings,” Sophie said. “Not especially to share with the world but simply with my family or husband, so they could understand and see a bit of what I felt. Later, when the series took shape, it became [apparent] that it was, simply, an homage to all women and how amazing we are!”

“It came all naturally, I didn’t have to overthink,” Sophie added. One piece titled “Virgin Territory” represents, yes, virginity, as symbolized by furry moss sprouting two diminutive mushrooms. Then there’s “Mûres,” which in French means both “blackberry” and “mature.” The photograph, meant to depict the act of menstruating, features a mound of blackberry’s between a woman’s thighs, dripping a deep, reddish juice. Another, called “Broken Eggs,” features splayed feathers and cracked eggshells, the remnants of a potential life lost.

Sophie is also in the process of adding more works to the series, addressing issues including miscarriage, illness, old age, transsexuality, abortion, prenatal and postpartum depression. She also hopes, in future shoots, to capture a more diverse range of models, specifically in terms of age and body type.

Through her series, Sophie hopes to represent a wide range of women ― the trials they endure, the transformations they undergo and the triumphs they achieve. “I take a special care to portray models within their natural strength,” she concluded. “What is more strong and fierce, anyway, than a person being themselves and assuming their choices?”

An Arkansas Judge Sent A Cancer Patient To ‘Debtors’ Prison’ Over A Few Bounced Checks

WASHINGTON ― Lee Robertson’s trouble began in late 2009, when he was undergoing his first stint of chemotherapy to battle the pancreatic cancer that had made it impossible for him to work. In the course of two weeks, Robertson wrote 11 checks at stores near his home for small amounts ranging from $ 5 to $ 41.

Robertson started off owing a few stores about $ 200. Six years and seven arrests later, in a closed courtroom in Sherwood District Court in Arkansas, Judge Milas “Butch” Hale sentenced the cancer patient to 90 days in jail. His crime? Owing the court $ 3,054.51.

That was last month. Robertson, 44, is now one of the plaintiffs in a class action federal civil rights lawsuit filed this week by the Arkansas Civil Liberties Union and the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. The suit aims to take on what has been described as a “modern-day debtors’ prison” in the city of Sherwood. Similar practices exist in courts around the country, including in several cities in St. Louis County, which received attention for their debt collection practices following the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, two years ago. Groups like Equal Justice Under Law, ArchCity Defenders, the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and the American Civil Liberties Union have been mounting challenges to unconstitutional court practices in many parts of the nation.

In Sherwood, the “Hot Check Division” of the municipal court is drawing scrutiny. While the division is supposed to be part of the municipal court, the city has marketed the division to the business community in Pulaski County, according to the lawsuit. Sherwood lists the division as a “department” on its website, and calls the court’s work a “service” for merchants ― one that issues “over 35,000 warrants annually” on charges in connection with bad checks. The court collected nearly $ 12 million in five years.

The new lawsuit describes a “lucrative” system in Sherwood that only barely resembles an actual court or independent judicial process. Bailiffs tell defendants that the court is closed, not allowing family and friends inside, and defendants are forced to sign a “waiver of counsel” form to enter the courtroom, meaning they forfeit their right to an attorney.

The suit claims that the Sherwood Police Department acts as an “extension” of the court’s “collections scheme,” arresting hundreds of people on “failure to pay” or “failure to appear” charges and helping the district court contribute nearly 12 percent of the city’s budget. Each overdrawn check, no matter how small, can bring in $ 400 in fines and fees, plus restitution for the amount of the check.

“This is a broken court system that disregards due process rights at every turn,” Kristen Clarke, president and executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, said in an interview, adding that the court pays “no attention” to due process rights.

“People are doomed for failure when they appear before the court, and most significantly trapped in this never-ending cycle of expanding debt,” she said. “With the resurgence of debtors’ prisons, we will continue to see people cycle in and our of jails and prisons across our country merely because of their inability to pay fines and fees tied to low-level, nonviolent offenses.”

Clarke said the Sherwood court, in particular, is “notorious” in the region.

“The facts were even worse than we thought,” she said.

Because of opposition to tax increases, the lawsuit states, “municipalities have turned to creating a system of debtors’ prisons to fuel the demand for increased public revenue from the pockets of their poorest and most vulnerable citizens.”

Robertson ultimately spent more than a month behind bars, cutting down on his time by doing manual labor for the jail. While his cancer is in remission, the lawsuit alleges that he did not receive medication for pancreatitis and high blood pressure during his time in jail. He was released on Aug. 15. (Shortly after Robertson’s departure, a 34-year-old man who was in Pulaski County Jail for criminal mischief and public intoxication hanged himself, an indication of potential problems in the facility. Experts agree that jail suicides are largely preventable, as The Huffington Post reported last month.)

Between the time of his charges and his latest jailing, Robertson had been sentenced to a stretch in jail over outstanding fines. Sherwood police officers came to his door, demanding money and threatening arrest. A private probation company, ProTrac, also charged Robertson $ 35 per month on top of the payments to the court, burying him further in debt.

He’s not alone. Nikki Petree, 40, was charged for bouncing a single check for $ 28.93, according to the lawsuit. She has been arrested in connection with that charge on at least seven occasions, and been jailed for more than 25 days. She’s paid at least $ 640 to the city.

Asked whether the term “scam” should be used to describe the practices of Sherwood’s municipal court, Clarke said it “feels too small a term to attach to what’s happening.”

The Obama administration has called attention to excessive fines and fees, and the Justice Department recently told a federal appeals court that bail practices that don’t account for indigence are unconstitutional. But many civil rights advocates would like the federal government to get more aggressive by prosecuting judges who clearly violate constitutional rights when they lock up poor individuals without looking into their financial capabilities.

“We do hope that the Justice Department will use its bully pulpit to speak out against debtors’ prisons and the criminalization of poverty and take more enforcement action to help bring an end to these broken court systems across the country,” Clarke said.

Judge Hale did not respond to a request for comment.

Two Keys Why You Don’t Receive & How to Shift It!

Have you ever wondered why you struggle receiving the things you want? I see this a lot in my coaching practice and with my students. In fact, I would say that receiving is one of the key issues most people face. I would like to share with you some thoughts that might help you break out of this painful cycle.

Here are the two core reasons I’ve seen over and over again that shut people down to receiving:

1. We are brought up to believe that receiving is wrong. For some, this belief stems in religion, and for others it begins in the home.

There is a tendency in religion to push the belief that being of service means you must deny yourself. In other words, don’t receive. But when you live by this belief, you shut down to taking the time to go within and connect to God. This is where you get the guidance you need to live life in the flow with grace and ease.

Even if your family wasn’t religious, you might have been brought up in a home in which your mom and dad gave themselves up to take care of your needs. They set the example that it wasn’t okay to receive. This is why it’s so important for parents to love themselves. They don’t realize that they are perpetuating a cycle of pain for their kids to grow up and do the same.

2. Feeling bad about one’s self is the second reason most people don’t receive. If you have beliefs, whether conscious or hidden, that tell you something is wrong with you or that you have to act a certain way to receive, you’ll stay shut down to having miracles show up. This is why it’s so important to do the inner work of cleaning up subconscious beliefs. As you chip away at each of them and raise your Worthiness Quotient to inner abundance, you attract outer abundance and miracles.

I share a story of Cassie in my book, The Enlightened Mom, and her awakening to the importance of receiving. Cassie had attended my weekly live Enlightened Mom class, focusing on helping the ladies release subconscious beliefs so they could finally love themselves unconditionally and open up to receive. From the very first session, most of the moms were having breakthroughs and seeing miracles show up in their daily lives. But Cassie was different. She was mired in the negativity of her mind and really struggled with receiving.

For the last session of our class, we went to a local bookstore and sat on the patio. I invited the ladies to take a moment and go within to get grounded and connected to God before going into the store. Their mission was to allow God to guide them and to open up to receive a message.

Cassie was the first one back to the patio! With tear-filled eyes and joy that was palpable, she shared the incredible messages she received, one after the other from the pages of a book she had been guided to pick up. Cassie exclaimed, “I get it now! I used to ask God for guidance and would get so angry because I never got answers. Now I realize the messages were always there. All I had to do was give myself permission to open up and receive them!”

Cassie had been mired in false beliefs about receiving. She gradually chipped away at some of those beliefs during our class. But it wasn’t until that day at the bookstore that she finally realized a huge truth:

You are the one who determines whether you receive.

2016-08-24-1472065296-5598401-15278638_s.jpg

Are you like Cassie was? Are you shut down to receiving the love, guidance and support you seek to make life a joyful flow?

If your answer is yes, it is time to look within. Do you have religious programming that says to be of service you must not receive? Or did you grow up in a family in which your parents put themselves on the backburner, giving you an example that this is love?

To be able to give freely, you must learn to receive. You can’t truly be of service if you’re coming from an empty cup.

Here are three simple steps to open up to receive:

1. Give yourself permission to receive. You are the boss of your life. If you’re not receiving a life of grace and ease, it’s because you’re still making others the authority of your life.

2. Take time daily to connect. Spend time in meditation, prayer, journaling or whatever works for you, but by all means, connect. This is a powerful way to set your inner compass to receiving.

3. Be you! Pay attention to when you shut down your voice, your feelings and your needs. Then give yourself permission to share these things. If you struggle with this, go within and clean up the beliefs that stop you down. By loving yourself unconditionally, you send out an energetic message to the universe that says, “I deserve to receive simply for being me!”

Receiving is the loving thing to do. As you transition into this new belief, you will feel loved, guided and supported. You will shift from lack to abundance. And your life will flow magically with grace and ease.

Receiving is an act of service.

As you give yourself permission to receive, your cup will be so full that you’ll want everyone else to feel the way you do. You’ll serve others by lifting them up. You’ll want to give like never before. Your life will be your greatest act of service.

Losing My Grandfather To Alzheimer’s

When I was a kid, my grandfather used to sip tea at the kitchen table before starting the day. I made sure to sit across from him and watch the steam rise from his mug. It was a routine I looked forward to each weekend, and I wouldn’t have traded it for the world back then ― which, if you had asked me at the time, was a Sega Genesis and an entire large pizza.

Saturday mornings were a ritual. The sun would rest at a certain angle in the sky, and its light hugged the furniture in the living room behind us. The shadows stretched across the hardwood floor, and like every morning, a glare would bounce off the grandfather clock that leaned against the far wall. You didn’t have to read its hands to tell what time it was, which was good, because my grandfather’s eyes weren’t too sharp. We just knew from the glare that we still had an entire day left to share together.

Separated by an entire generation, my partner in crime had always been this pugnacious Italian man with hair slicked back like he had just walked off the set of “Jersey Boys.”

This was before his memory started to fade.

Last summer, the most important man in my life was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Separated by an entire generation, my partner in crime had always been this pugnacious Italian man with hair slicked back like he had just walked off the set of “Jersey Boys.” At 5 feet 6 inches, he was never a man of stature. But that son-of-a-bitch always made sure you knew he was in the room, and he sure as hell never took shit from anyone.

Our breakfasts were always the same: a handful of shortbread cookies and enough sugar in my tea to put an army of diabetics into shock. He wore a gold chain around his neck, and his t-shirts were always frayed at the sleeves. Faded tattoos peppered his arms, all of them damaged by decades of sun exposure soaking into his wrinkled skin.

On some mornings we’d have chores to do, so we’d take our breakfast on the road. I loved it ― I rode shotgun in his beat-up Ford and counted cars with Bob Seager in the cassette deck. At lunch, we’d kill time in a smokey basement of a pet shop with men eight times my age, their skin like wrinkled paper, who would trade homing pigeons and spit on the ground. I was just another one of the boys.

“Always aim for the nose,” he’d say so matter-of-factly, with his fist balled up in front of his face and his right hand cocked beside his ear. Terrible advice, when I was old enough to realize it. But it was his duty to coach me when the teasing at school became too much. Later, I’d practice my right hook in the mirror. That man, the fighter that I always knew, is falling into obscurity.

Every weekend started in that kitchen. So many memories we created just by sitting at that table. Now, as he struggles to remember the name of the street he’s lived on for four decades, I know it’s my job to cherish them for both of us.

Now, as he struggles to remember the name of the street he’s lived on for four decades, I know it’s my job to cherish [the memories] for both of us.

I know I’ll follow him to the end, if only to stand at the threshold where lucidity blurs with the murky, winding path of dementia. I can wave goodbye as he walks deeper into its grasp, hoping to God that my presence somehow makes his transition into the night a little easier. At some point, my fixed smile, too far off in the distance for him to see, will know when it’s safe to let myself cry.

What matters to me most is my last impression in his dimming world: my crowded, goofy grin there to see him off. I will savor that moment and give us one more laugh to share ― even if I have to force it, even if it isn’t the same anymore. I want our story to end on our terms.

I can wave goodbye as he walks deeper into its grasp, hoping to God that my presence somehow makes his transition into the night a little easier.

Down the hall from the kitchen, I still press my ear to the door of his bedroom, like I’ve done so many times as a child, and feel the hollowness of the wood that separates us.

The grandfather clock chimes behind me with its glare beaming back, and I know that he is gone.

The deep sorrow that accompanies the death of a loved one, the end of a marriage or even moving far away from home, is real. But while grief is universal, we all grieve differently. He fuses fiction, reportage and autobiography in an attempt to illustrate the social collapse of Greece after 2009 and its subsequent lack of creative imagination. The book consists of brief snapshots based on episodes that take place in Athens, ranging from people eating rotten food in garbage bins, to contemporary political discussions at the Greek Parliament and the representation of the struggle of ordinary people to make their living. “This is a courageous, angry and powerful book, in which like James Joyce, Vrasidas Karalis can be said to have written ‘a chapter in the moral history of my race’.” -Nicholas Murray, British biographer, poet and journalist

Justin Timberlake And Jessica Biel Took Over A Photobooth With Hillary Clinton

Somewhere, Donald Trump and his tiny hands are very, very jealous.

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel hosted a fundraising luncheon for Hillary Clinton on Tuesday, and it looks like everyone had a ball. The event, which was held at the TimberBiel’s Los Angeles home, also included a photobooth.

Let’s just say HRC and her loyal subjects made the most of it:

Look who came over for lunch… #imwithher

A photo posted by Jessica Biel (@jessicabiel) on

According to Variety, Leonardo DiCaprio was originally supposed to throw the swanky affair, but had to back out because of a project. Biel and Timberlake stepped up to hold the party, where guests attended for a measly $ 33,400 per person.

Clinton reportedly also blessed Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Aniston, Shonda Rhimes and Tobey Maguire with her presence at the luncheon. We’ll be waiting on their photobooth pics to see if they top the ones above.

Bali High

2016-08-23-1471979701-4140362-BaliHigh2.jpg

Although I’ve been home from Bali several weeks, I keep dreaming I’m there…the sounds, the smells, images of the people wash over me:

  • The beauty of this island full of flowers and smiling faces.
  • The gamelan music, an orchestra of percussion instruments, bells and bamboo flutes that mimic the sounds of a Bali morning – insects, birds, roosters, ocean waves.
  • The scent of incense lingering from the daily offerings of carefully crafted coconut or palm frond containers full of colorful flowers, offered to appease the lower gods and honor the higher gods.
  • The chaos of cars, trucks and motorbikes carrying whole families and goods to market passing within inches on narrow roads – made safe by the gentle toot or toot-toot that signals passing.

Immersed in the Balinese culture for two weeks, I was reminded there are so many good ways to live. We visited my friend Susan, a psychologist, who lives in Bali. There is no work for her among the locals. They are too happy. Traveling with my daughter Lisa, we mused about what keeps the people contented. Lisa wrote about it in her blog: What the Balinese do for Anxiety.

As part of their Hindu Buddhist religion, as Lisa describes, everyone prepares and dedicates offerings to the gods. Every day. In every home, store and village. Before picking us up, our drivers prayed in their family temples for our safe trips. Children learn very young to play in a gamelan orchestra, and to dance the traditional Balinese dances. The dancing is complex, physically difficult, using every body part including head and eyes, in still and flowing patterns to the sound of the gamelan, each movement carrying meaning. The dances act out familiar stories that are sometimes funny, always teaching moral lessons. Characters include the gods of good and mischief and evil. Beautifully carved sacred masks and elaborate costumes are integral to the dances.

We saw several Balinese dance performances, and one night we were treated to another traditional form of theater – a shadow puppet show. Behind the screen, which we were invited to visit, was an entire family supporting the puppeteer. He told a piece of the traditional Ramayana story – an ancient, epic Hindu story. However, he improvised the telling for the audience (our small group of Americans.) He made it modern and relevant to us, including references to surprising things like Pokemon Go!

Steeped in tradition, ritual and shared beliefs, the Balinese are warm, relaxed and friendly. Good humor abounds. They seem untroubled by questions like, “Who am I?” “Where do I belong?” and “How can I feel safe?” Those questions are answered in the context of their daily lives, living with family, belonging to compound and village, doing the daily rituals, sharing in the many large ceremonies and celebrations.

Bali is an open-hearted culture. Thinking of it makes me happy. I hope my Bali dreams continue.

Since coming home, I’ve been asking myself questions: how might we build ritual and tradition more solidly into our daily lives? How open-hearted is the United States? And – what might be an American equivalent to the gentle, respectful horn toots on the highways that keep people calm, safe and cared for?

COACHING QUESTIONS

  1. What new perspective have you gained from visiting other cultures (here or in other countries?)
  2. What rituals or traditions do you practice in your life?
  3. How do they help you feel safe and connect you with others?
  4. What rituals/traditions would you like to create in your life?
  5. When will you start?
  6. How do you contribute to the open-heartedness of your culture?

P.S. I promised to follow up on how well StopJetLag worked. It worked! Stopped jetlag in its tracks. Lisa and I recommend it heartily.

Sleeping With Someone Who Grits Or Grinds His Or Her Teeth During The Night

Millions of people grit or grind their teeth as they sleep. They bite down hard; they grit or grind their teeth back and forth; they clench their teeth. And whatever they do goes on night after night. Technically it is called bruxism. Sleeping with someone who bruxes can make it hard to sleep. What can a person do who can’t fall asleep or can’t stay asleep because of a partner’s grinding or gritting teeth?

Wake Your Partner Up
Some of the people I interviewed for my book Two in a Bed who had a partner who bruxed said that it sometimes helped to wake their partner up. They might push at the partner or lightly shake the partner. One man woke his wife up when he couldn’t sleep because of her clenching and grinding her teeth by yelling out “That’s enough!” She would usually stop grinding her teeth for a few minutes, even if she didn’t wake up, and that often gave him enough time to fall asleep.

Maybe a Dentist or Oral Surgeon Can Help
Grinding teeth can be quite painful. Many people who grind teeth at night have sore jaws during their waking hours. Many have aching or cracked teeth, or they break the fillings or crowns in their teeth. Some have chronic headaches. The pain itself can be quite unpleasant. Plus when they get that sore they can find it extremely painful to eat, yawn, or do other things with their jaw. At some point, many people with bruxism are driven to a dentist or oral surgeon by the pain. And a worried spouse or lover (who may also be losing sleep because of the bruxism) may push their bruxing sleep partner to get that kind of help. And in fact, many people who grind their teeth at night only know that they do that because their sleeping partner tells them about it.

A dentist or oral surgeon may help. Many people use a dentist-fitted night-time mouth guard, a cushioning device shaped for their mouth, that protects the teeth and reduces or eliminates the grinding. Some people have had jaw surgery, which doesn’t necessarily eliminate the grinding but helps to reduce the pain that has developed in the jaw joint.

Sleep Apart
Some couples sleep apart some or all of the time so that the partner of the person who bruxes can get to sleep more easily and stay asleep. Of course, that means they lose the many advantages of sharing a bed–the intimacy and safety, the sexual access, the possibility of night time conversations before falling asleep, and so on. And sleeping apart only works if there is a decent sleeping place elsewhere in the house and if it’s far enough away from the bruxer so that the partner who has fled the bruxer can’t still hear the bruxing.

Tension Reduction May Help
Sometimes the bruxing develops because of specific tensions in a person’s life, and if those tensions can be ended or at least managed differently, the bruxing will stop. For example, in one couple I interviewed the woman’s bruxing started when their adult son, his wife, and their baby moved back home. The adult son and his wife were constantly arguing and the baby was often crying. The woman said that is when her bruxing started, and sometimes the only way she could get away from the constant squabbling and crying and to give her husband a chance to sleep free of her bruxing was to go to the backyard and sleep on the trampoline. But eventually she just told her son and his wife to move out, and they did. And then the woman stopped bruxing.

Some people find ways on their own to reduce tensions that underlie their tooth gritting and grinding. Some are helped by a psychologist or other therapist to deal with underlying issues in their lives, anything from how they let work get to them to how they deal with their children or other family members to, well, almost anything. Some learn relaxation techniques, including yoga, meditation, self-hypnosis, exercise, and how to change how they think about the stressors in their lives.

Turkey Ponders New Directions After July Coup, Should The U.S. Be Concerned?

2016-08-21-1471796198-923513-image1.jpeg

Given campaign rhetoric about NATO’s being obsolete and the inability of Muslims to govern free of religious dogma, the significance of last month’s failed coup in Turkey is being overlooked at a time when it ought to be front and center, particularly as Americans contemplate their own role in an increasingly unstable Middle East.

Supporters of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan argue the United States had a hand in this bungled coup. Others claim the founder of the Gülen movement, a self-exiled Turkish cleric named Fethullah Gülen — who ironically resides in Pennsylvania — was behind it all. To confound matters, Gülen is (some claim) involved with a string of charter schools, including in Houston and Waco, Texas that encourage the teaching of science and math rather than religious ideology. The conflicting claims and charges about all this have left security analysts scratching their heads.

To those who claim the United States had a hand in the coup, the question is this: What possible motive could the United States have for manipulating the coup? The Turkish situation is far different from, say, what took place in Iran in 1953 when both the CIA and Britain’s famed MI6 orchestrated the coup that ousted Mohammad Mossadegh. At the time Iran was seen as hostile to the United States and a threat to our strategic interests in the region.

It’s unlikely Turkey will follow the Iranian model and spark an Islamic revolution such as that of 1979. Erdogan is no Khomeini. And Turkey doesn’t fit the profile.

Whatever else, Turkey on paper remains an ally of the United States, despite its no longer necessarily sharing Washington’s particular interests and vision. And it’s still a NATO member. So the argument the United States would seek to destabilize a country pivotal to American interests including broad regional defense must falter on the altar of stone-cold reason.

And while it offers some plausibility, the argument about Gülen’s backing the coup lacks evidence. Even so, the Turkish government has requested the United States extradite him to Ankara to face justice — a contentious political issue in already tense U.S.-Turkish relations.

Despite its failure, the coup could have major ramifications. The concern among Western capitals is: What sort of foreign policy will Erdogan pursue now that he appears to wield even more power after his crackdown on remaining opposition, including the arrests of some 16,000 people? Washington has already expressed displeasure with Erdogan’s authoritarian tendencies. To the chagrin of the United States, Turkey’s increasingly combative nature could hinder regional efforts to crush ISIS.

The failed coup also paves the way for closer ties between Moscow and Ankara. This comes as analysts gauge vulnerabilities of the U.S. nuclear arsenal at Incirlik air base in Turkey.

In a world where tests of secular Muslim leadership too often seem to fail, what’s unfolding in Turkey is discouraging. Chaos and lack of trust are becoming the order of the day. This could extend to massive surveillance programs under the dubious pretext of preventing further coup attempts. That means democracy is faltering, freedom of the press will cease to exist and Turkey, the one secular Muslim power we admired from afar, could become another example of short-circuited governance. This could confirm my theory that there will never be real democracy in the Muslim world — and that the West needs to stop fantasizing about this unrealistic idea. And that means no more futile nation-building exercises in the Middle East.

Where does Turkey go from here? Who knows? What’s certain, however, is that the Turkish government has no desire to take steps that bolster democratic principles. This means the United States needs to evaluate this relationship and decide how to proceed, because Turkey no longer conforms to what’s expected of a U.S. ally. Turkey is convinced it no longer needs to pursue a foreign policy that meets Washington’s expectations. Instead, it is pursuing a path that will allow it to play a more influential role in the region, one playing on Muslim passions in more extreme parts, even as it seeks to entice Russia into its toxic orbit.

What No One Told Me About Following My Passion

Like much of my generation in America, I don’t have to worry about where my next meal will come from. I don’t have to worry about how I’ll get to work. I don’t have to worry about a safe, dry place to sleep.

So I worry about something else, with which much less of the world has the luxury of preoccupation: purpose. Some spend their days searching for food; I spend my life hunting meaning–full, but unsatisfied.

Most millennials’ basic needs have been met–a prerequisite for fulfilling our greatest potential. If we don’t make our lives meaningful, we will have dishonored and squandered our opportunity. Perhaps this responsibility explains our fixation with purpose.

We know what we want. The question is: how do we find it?

Hoping that international travel and novel experiences would infuse my life with meaning, I moved to Canada when I graduated college. There I learned, as I conclude in my essay The Myth of Wanderlust, “you can’t drive to purpose.”

So I returned home and pursued my lifelong passion of writing. For the last two years, I’ve followed a self-authored, step-by-step plan to successfully discovering, integrating and making money from my passions. A marketing position, an editing role and six months of self-employment later, I realized you can’t write to purpose, either.

Passion, I’ve learned, does not equal purpose.

Why?

Here’s a synopsis of the 8000 words I initially spewed on this question:

Passion, the way many millennials have come to define it, is self-oriented. Passion is “a strong inclination toward a self-defining activity that one loves, values, and in which one invests a substantial amount of time and energy,” explains one study published in Self and Identity.

Purpose, on the other hand, is other-oriented. One Stanford study found that individuals with meaning mindsets “seek connections, give to others, and orient themselves to a larger purpose.”

Modern passion is pleasure-oriented. One influential study on passion defines it as “an autonomous internalization that leads individuals to choose to engage in the activity that they like.” In other words, passion’s answer to “Why are you doing this?” is “Because I like it.”

But meaningfulness, sums the Stanford study, sometimes involves “feeling bad”.

Passion is short-term. Though we tend to assume it’s lifelong, passion changes more than we anticipate because we change more than we anticipate. As Terri Trespicio observes in her TEDx Talk, “Passion is not a plan. Passion is a feeling, and feelings change.”

Purpose is hardy. Gritty individuals, explains one study, prioritize long-term goals. This long-term perspective, another study notes, helps give “more weight to meaning than pleasure” and solidifies self-control.

I don’t regret following my passion. In fact, I still endorse my strategy. Passions help us understand who we are and what we want. They bring vitality and joy to our days. But following your passion is a deceptively slow, uncertain way to purpose.

If I could tell myself anything three years ago when I graduated college, it would probably be this:

“Follow your passion, sure. But don’t expect it to produce your purpose.”

A Unique Approach To Discomfort

“Destiny is not for comfort seekers. Destiny is for the daring and determined who are willing to endure some discomfort, delay gratification, and go where destiny leads.” ~ T.D. Jakes

“We ask God for signs, wonders and miracles, but refuse to go into circumstances where we need them.” — Christine Caine

One may believe that a happy life eschews pain and discomfort by all costs. But, in truth, life opens up to us and expands when we’re squeezed and pushed through discomfort. Our emotional constriction, which creates our discomfort, begins to soften and expand when we lean into our discomfort. Moreover, our dreams are actualized through moments of confusion, doubt, fear, and uncertainty. So, when we’re pushed into our discomfort zone, we’re better able to witness and cultivate new skills that will propel us to new heights in our spiritual, emotional, and physical evolution.

How many of us can say that we have grown and transformed the most when we are “seemingly” sailing through life? Not many of us. When things appear superficially “perfect” and aligned in our lives, what could possibly ignite us toward growth and realizing God’s deeper purpose for our lives?

However, what indubitably pushes us toward greater fulfillment and purpose in our lives is when we’re tightly squeezed and pushed through discomfort. The physical manifestation of the contrast between what we deeply desire on a soulful level to what is actually showing up in our lives, creates the emotional and spiritual dissonance for us to push through and create transformation.

Transformation is accelerated in our lives through pain and discomfort. Such that, God will use different people, events, and circumstances to show up in our lives that cause us aggravation and distress, as a catalyst for growth and inspiration. Personally, I created a life that I dreamed of, living on a paradise island as a Life & Spiritual Coach & Teacher, not by coasting through life and feeling on top of the world. No. My life was radically changed when I hit my lowest point. When my pain and suffering had become enough.

Through pain and suffering, my heart opened up to greater transparency for God’s light to shine through and heal, motivate, and push me at deeper levels. Surely, the pressure was strong and tightening, but the more pressure I experienced, the harder I fought. Had I experienced continued success selling real estate in New York City, perhaps with money flowing in easily and effortlessly, and joy living in a city that stole my heart 19 years ago, I would not be living the life of my dreams right now. I’d still be living a life that was content and good, but truthfully, mediocre in the eyes of God. But, God doesn’t want GOOD ENOUGH for our lives, he wants GREAT!

So where is discomfort showing up in your life? Is it in a relationship? A job? Your living circumstances? Your finances? Your health? Or a lack of balance in your life? Consider each difficulty as a message that God has something better and more meaningful for your life. As we release the need to pity ourselves in difficult times and rather use discomfort as the catalyst toward change, we create an opportunity for greater richness and joy in our lives. Discomfort and pressure will always show up. To the extent that, although my life is greater than it’s ever been, there are newer and completely different experiences of discomfort that appear. But, with greater awareness I now recognize that my discomfort shows me that there’s still more for me to see and do in my life. This inspires me to work harder and explore my path with greater curiosity and determination.

Today, find peace with your discomfort. Embrace the stickiness. Ask for its lessons and guidance. Trust that your uneasiness is the vehicle to catapult you to places you’ve never been before. Use discomfort to your advantage in creating a life you dream of.

To All the Poets of the World

To All the Poets of the World

If one truly aspires to be a great artist or writer, all dimensions of the heart, mind, and spirit must be thoroughly explored. Bravely and fearfully, you must examine deep personal areas of your psyche, which can be beautiful but at the same time frightening. All feelings derived from your existence must be embraced, such as pain, sorrow, hope, fear, and love. Tony Bronk exposes his naked soul using art and prose as his vehicle. All human emotions are expressed vividly and without compromise. He’s willing to go out on a limb, precarious and dangerous as that may be. He knows that if you dare to go out on that limb artistically, that’s where the fruit is found.

Food & Your Health

Since Consumers’ Research Magazine’s inception in 1928, readers have been given reliable and useful information on food issues. Characteristically, much of the information had been provided far in advance of official concern or public awareness. Thus, you will find a discussion of E. coli 0157:H7 printed in May 1991 – several years prior to the publicized incident in a fast food restaurant that affected many children. Information on the newly banned pesticide Alar was printed in November 1985, and the possible association between carrageenan and ulcerative colitis appeared as early as May 1972. These, and many other topics included in this anthology, appeared years prior to official recognition that these food issues posed public health problems. Every article included in this book can enlighten you as a consumer, in order to make intelligent choices in a bewildering marketplace.

GOP Governor Brings Illinois Into The 21st Century By Nixing Antiquated Tampon Tax

Not so long after the GOP presidential nominee blamed his inability to answer tough questions on the possibility his questioner was menstruating, another Republican is taking strides to make period week a little bit easier.

On Friday, Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner (R) signed a law ending sales taxes on feminine hygiene products such as pads and tampons. This makes Illinois the third state this year to eliminate the tax, following New York and Connecticut. Similar legislation has been introduced in 12 other states.

“This is just the start of a conversation about the unfair ‘pink taxes’ women face as they buy products priced higher than similar ones marketed to men or, in this case, as they have to spend on products that men don’t,” said Illinois state Sen. Melinda Bush (D), the bill’s sponsor.

“Pink taxes” refer to the extra funds women spend on certain products and services ― such as feminine hygiene products, razors, haircuts, insurance and even pillows ― over comparable products marketed to men.

A number of states fail to recognize feminine hygiene products as necessities and tax them as luxury items. Women pay an estimated $ 1,300 more than men each year on products marketed toward them, and a woman can anticipate spending $ 18,000 on her period over her lifetime.

But, shocker, not every Republican-governed state is as open to making life more fair for women.

Indiana state House Republicans rejected a measure to end pink taxes in January. Tennessee Republicans are cool with additional sales taxes on tampons but not gold coins. Utah’s GOP-dominated state legislature voted to maintain the luxury tax on feminine hygiene products ― and only men debated the matter.

In 2013, when the Texas state senate was preparing to discuss the state abortion bill, state troopers threw tampons and other items belonging to people entering the gallery into the trash.

The new Illinois law takes effect on Jan. 1.

These Underwater Yoga Photos Prove The Practice Is Truly Magical

Looking for a reason to hit the yoga mat today? Take a gander at these stunning photos.

The surreal images, which were snapped by photographer Elena Kalis, feature yoga instructor Britta Jade as she masterfully executes yoga poses under water. They’re a truly majestic display of how yoga can be both athletic and a work of art.

The photos are an inspirational reminder that the practice can be one of the best ways to move your body. Research shows yoga can reduce stress and lower your risk for heart disease. It also can improve your sleep and boost your brain function. Not to mention the fact that yoga can be an excellent form of strength training, which can help maintain a healthy weight.

While not everyone can exactly run off to the crystal shores of a remote island to nail these moves, there are some added perks to taking your yoga practice to the water. Studies suggest being near the ocean can make you calmer and more creative. The sea also puts your brain in a more meditative state.

If you’ve been slacking on a yoga routine (or hesitant to try one at all), take a look at the pictures below. Then check out these healthy reasons to prioritize the practice for additional motivation.

Health Official Warns Zika Could Spread Across U.S. Gulf

Aug 21 (Reuters) – One of the top U.S. public health officials on Sunday warned that the mosquito-borne Zika virus could extend its reach across the U.S. Gulf Coast after officials last week confirmed it as active in the popular tourist destination of Miami Beach.

The possibility of transmission in Gulf States such as Louisiana and Texas will likely fuel concerns that the virus, which has been shown to cause the severe birth defect known as microcephaly, could spread across the continental United States, even though officials have played down such an outcome.

Concern has mounted since confirmation that Zika has expanded into a second region of the tourist hub of Miami-Dade County in Florida. Miami’s Wynwood arts neighborhood last month became the site of the first locally transmitted cases of Zika in the continental United States.

“It would not be surprising we would see additional cases perhaps in other Gulf Coast states,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the allergy and infectious diseases unit of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), said in an interview on Sunday morning with ABC News.

Fauci noted that record flooding this month in Louisiana – which has killed at least 13 people and damaged some 60,000 homes damaged – has boosted the likelihood Zika will spread into that state.

“There’s going to be a lot of problems getting rid of standing water” that could stymie the mosquito control efforts that are the best way to control Zika’s spread, he said.

U.S. health officials have concluded that Zika infections in pregnant women can cause microcephaly, a birth defect marked by small head size that can lead to severe developmental problems in babies. The connection between Zika and microcephaly first came to light last fall in Brazil, which has now confirmed 1,835 cases of microcephaly that it considers to be related to Zika infections in the mothers.

On Friday, Florida Governor Rick Scott confirmed that state health officials had identified five cases of Zika believed to be contracted in Miami Beach.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told pregnant women they should avoid the trendy area and suggested those especially worried about exposure might consider avoiding all of Miami-Dade County.

NIH’s Fauci on Sunday said the conditions of most of the country make it unlikely there would be a “diffuse, broad outbreak,” even though officials need to prepare for that possibility.

He compared it with diseases such as Dengue, which is endemic in certain tropical and subtropical regions of the world but rarely occurs in the continental United States. In Miami’s Wynwood area, experts have seen “substantial” knockdowns of mosquito populations.

Still, its containment is more complicated because Zika can be sexually transmitted, Fauci said.

“This is something that could hang around for a year or two,” he said.

The World Health Organization has said there is strong scientific consensus that Zika can also cause Guillain-Barre, a rare neurological syndrome that causes temporary paralysis in adults.

Jerry Falwell Jr. Seriously Compared Trump To Winston Churchill

Campaign leadership shakeup? Check.

Sort-of apology? Check.

Offensive outreach speech aimed at African-Americans and delivered to a white audience? Check.

The struggling presidential campaign of Donald Trump has tried many things in recent days to revive the GOP nominee’s dimming chances against Hillary Clinton.

Now, we can add a prominent surrogate’s comparison of Trump to legendary British prime minister Winston Churchill to the growing list of Hail Mary passes by the campaign and its allies.

“We need a leader with qualities that resemble those of Winston Churchill, and I believe that leader is Donald Trump,” evangelical Christian leader Jerry Falwell Jr. wrote in an op-ed in The Washington Post on Friday. “As Churchill did, Trump possesses the resolve to put his country first and to never give up in a world that is increasingly hostile to our values.”

The analogy to Churchill comes not from anything Trump has done yet, but from the strength with which Falwell believes Trump will confront the global jihadist terror threat, just as Churchill stood up to the Nazis.

Falwell, president of Liberty University, a conservative Christian institution in Virginia, was an early endorser of Trump. In the aftermath of the terror attack in San Bernardino, California, in December, Falwell said that if more people carried guns, “we could end those Muslims.” (Falwell later clarified that he meant Muslims who carry out acts of terror, rather than all Muslims.)

In other ways, Falwell’s Washington Post op-ed reads more like a typical conservative indictment of Democratic foreign policy. Just as Trump is the “Churchillian leader we need,” in Falwell’s telling, President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Clinton are, conversely, the “Neville Chamberlains of our time” for brokering a deal with Iran to eliminate its nuclear weapons program. (Chamberlain was Churchill’s immediate predecessor, best known for trying to appease German dictator Adolf Hitler with the cession of a portion of Czechoslovakia.)

Many conservatives have called the Obama administration’s Iran accord a foolhardy, Chamberlain-esque deal with the devil. The White House, nonproliferation experts and even many top Israeli security officials argue that while it is imperfect, it is the best shot at preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

But Falwell clings to the hardline conservative myth that Republican leaders in Congress could have done more to stop Obama’s foreign policy.

“All of this was enabled by a feckless establishment Republican Congress,” he wrote.

In fact, congressional Republicans are limited in their ability to obstruct Obama by the Constitution’s separation of powers. They are able to hold up legislation related to domestic policy proposed by the president, but as commander in chief, he can negotiate certain foreign agreements and prosecute counter-terrorism efforts as he sees fit.

In his Friday op-ed, Falwell also urged conservatives to vote for Trump out of concern for the liberal Supreme Court justices Clinton would get to appoint.

“If Clinton appoints the next few Supreme Court justices, not only will the Second Amendment right to bear arms be effectively lost, but also activist judges will rewrite our Constitution in ways that would make it unrecognizable to our founders,” he wrote.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

9 Habits Of Highly Emotionally Intelligent People

2016-08-18-1471553223-9662730-9HabitsofHighlyEmotionallyIntelligentPeopleHP.jpg

When emotional intelligence first appeared to the masses, it threw a massive wrench into what many people had always assumed was the sole source of success–IQ.

How much of an impact does emotional intelligence (EQ) have on your personal and professional success? The short answer is: a lot! It’s a powerful way to focus your energy in one direction with a tremendous result.

Emotional intelligence is the “something” in each of us that is a bit intangible. It affects how we manage behavior, navigate social complexities, and make personal decisions that achieve positive results. Emotional intelligence is made up of four core skills that pair up under two primary competencies: personal competence and social competence.

Personal competence comprises your self-awareness and self-management skills, which focus more on you individually than on your interactions with other people. Personal competence is your ability to stay aware of your emotions and manage your behavior and tendencies.

  • Self-Awareness is your ability to accurately perceive your emotions and stay aware of them as they happen.
  • Self-Management is your ability to use awareness of your emotions to stay flexible and positively direct your behavior.

Social competence is made up of your social awareness and relationship management skills; social competence is your ability to understand other people’s moods, behavior, and motives in order to respond effectively and improve the quality of your relationships.

  • Social Awareness is your ability to accurately pick up on emotions in other people and understand what is really going on.
  • Relationship Management is your ability to use awareness of your emotions and the others’ emotions to manage interactions successfully.

Despite the significance of emotional intelligence, its intangible nature makes it very difficult to know which behaviors you should emulate. So I’ve analyzed the data from the million-plus people TalentSmart has tested in order to identify the habits that set high-EQ people apart.

1. They’re relentlessly positive. Keep your eyes on the news for any length of time, and you’ll see that it’s just one endless cycle of war, violent attacks, fragile economies, failing companies, and environmental disasters. It’s easy to think the world is headed downhill fast. And who knows? Maybe it is. But emotionally intelligent people don’t worry about that because they don’t get caught up in things they can’t control. They focus their energy on directing the two things that are completely within their power–their attention and their effort. Numerous studies have shown that optimists are physically and psychologically healthier than pessimists. They also perform better at work. Remind yourself of this the next time a negative train of thought takes hold of you.

2. They have a robust emotional vocabulary. All people experience emotions, but it is a select few who can accurately identify them as they occur, which is problematic because unlabeled emotions often go misunderstood, which leads to irrational choices and counterproductive actions. People with high EQs master their emotions because they understand them, and they use an extensive vocabulary of feelings to do so. While many people might describe themselves as simply feeling “bad,” emotionally intelligent people can pinpoint whether they feel “irritable,” “frustrated,” “downtrodden,” or “anxious.” The more specific your word choice, the better insight you have into exactly how you are feeling, what caused it, and what you should do about it.

3. They’re assertive. People with high EQs balance good manners, empathy, and kindness with the ability to assert themselves and establish boundaries. This tactful combination is ideal for handling conflict. When most people are crossed, they default to passive or aggressive behavior. Emotionally intelligent people remain balanced and assertive by steering themselves away from unfiltered emotional reactions. This enables them to neutralize difficult and toxic people without creating enemies.

4. They’re curious about other people. It doesn’t matter if they’re introverted or extroverted, emotionally intelligent people are curious about everyone around them. This curiosity is the product of empathy, one of the most significant gateways to a high EQ. The more you care about other people and what they’re going through, the more curiosity you’re going to have about them.

5. They forgive, but they don’t forget. Emotionally intelligent people live by the motto “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.” They forgive in order to prevent a grudge, but they never forget. The negative emotions that come with holding onto a grudge are actually a stress response. Holding on to that stress can have devastating health consequences, and emotionally intelligent people know to avoid this at all costs. However, offering forgiveness doesn’t mean they’ll give a wrongdoer another chance. Emotionally intelligent people will not be bogged down by mistreatment from others, so they quickly let things go and are assertive in protecting themselves from future harm.

6. They won’t let anyone limit their joy. When your sense of pleasure and satisfaction are derived from comparing yourself to others, you are no longer the master of your own happiness. When emotionally intelligent people feel good about something that they’ve done, they won’t let anyone’s opinions or accomplishments take that away from them. While it’s impossible to turn off your reactions to what others think of you, you don’t have to compare yourself to others, and you can always take people’s opinions with a grain of salt. That way, no matter what other people are thinking or doing, your self-worth comes from within. Regardless of what people think of you at any particular moment, one thing is certain–you’re never as good or bad as they say you are.

7. They make things fun. Emotionally intelligent people know exactly what makes them happy, and they constantly work to bring this happiness into everything they do. They turn monotonous work into games, go the extra mile to make people they care about happy, and take breaks to enjoy the things they love no matter how busy they are. They know that injecting this fun into their lives fights off stress and builds lasting resilience.

8. They are difficult to offend. If you have a firm grasp of whom you are, it’s difficult for someone to say or do something that gets your goat. Emotionally intelligent people are self-confident and open-minded, which creates a pretty thick skin.

9. They squash negative self-talk. A big step in developing emotional intelligence involves stopping negative self-talk in its tracks. The more you ruminate on negative thoughts, the more power you give them. Most of our negative thoughts are just that–thoughts, not facts. You can stop the negative and pessimistic things your inner voice says by writing them down. Once you’ve taken a moment to slow down the negative momentum of your thoughts, you will be more rational and clear-headed in evaluating their veracity. You can bet that your statements aren’t true any time you use words such as “never,” “worst,” and “ever.” If your statements still look like facts once they’re on paper, take them to a friend and see if he or she agrees with you. Then the truth will surely come out.

Bringing It All Together

Unlike your IQ, your EQ is highly malleable. As you train your brain by repeatedly practicing new emotionally intelligent behaviors, your brain builds the pathways needed to make them into habits. Before long, you will begin responding to your surroundings with emotional intelligence without even having to think about it. And as your brain reinforces the use of new behaviors, the connections supporting old, destructive behaviors will die off.

Back to School Means Heavy Backpacks And Back Pain

With school is just around the corner, children will be abandoning the playground and returning to the classroom. With an emphasis on providing a sound education for this young generation, children are given a literal “heavier” workload year after year. This has translated into more books and more accessories, which greatly contributes to the normalcy and reliance on carrying backpacks. However, despite their usefulness, backpacks can cause serious back pain if overloaded or worn improperly.

To understand how heavy backpacks contribute to back pain, it’s important to look at the composition of the back. The adolescent spine is composed of 33 bones called vertebrae with discs between them that act as natural shock absorbers. When a heavy backpack is incorrectly placed over a child’s shoulders, the weight of the bag can force the child backwards. Usually, children counteract this force by arching or bending forward at the hips, causing the spine to compress unnaturally and contributing to neck, shoulder and back pain.

The best way to prevent lower back pain is to either avoid overstuffing a backpack. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, children should limit their backpack weight to between 10 and 15 percent of their body weight. Backpacks weighing more than this are too heavy to maintain a standing posture. This weight causes children to lean forward, affecting the natural curve in the lumbar and lower back regions resulting in variety of orthopaedic injuries.

Dr. Ebraheim says,
“Kids these days think backpacks are moving libraries, carrying heavier weights back and forth to school and between classes without taking breaks. The weight can cause a variety of back problems including scoliosis. This is a problem not only for the child’s health but also because back pain can interfere with the learning environment. Kids need to feel healthy during the day so they can keep up with their schoolwork injury free.”

Wearing a backing improperly can also cause back injury. Many times children will sling their backpacks over only one shoulder. This uneven distribution of weight causes the child to compensate by leaning to one side. The frequent imbalance causes muscle strain. The problem can be exacerbated if backpacks have tight or narrow straps, as they can interfere with circulation and nerves.

There are, however, some simple ways to prevent your child from developing back pain. First, it’s important to monitor the weight of children’s backpacks to ensure that they are not overloading them. Second, purchase a backpack with wide, padded straps to distribute the load over the shoulders evenly. Backpacks that have waist and additional shoulder straps may also prove beneficial in transferring the load to the hips and preventing slouching. Lastly, it’s important to concentrate the bulk of the weight closest to your child’s body in the middle of the back. This will help your child achieve better posture and balance, while preventing possible falls.
