Really? The DNC has a Politicized Staff?

44 years ago this month I left George McGovern’s presidential campaign to go to work for the Democratic National Committee. Accompanying me in that move was a longtime political operative named Alan Baron who was elevated to the position of DNC executive director. We were not only the first two McGovern supporters to be employed by the Committee; we were probably the only two who had not worked to prevent him from getting his party’s nomination.
We were certainly in a position to settle old scores but we took the preconvention activities of the DNC staff in due course. When national political parties hire staff they generally don’t look for candidates who lack political preferences. We not only accepted that these men and women had such preferences, we expected it. We were far more interested in what these people could do in the future than what they may or may not have done in the past.
So I find it somewhat peculiar that many in the Sanders campaign would be so fixated on the emails of the DNC staff during primaries. I can fully understand why the Senator’s campaign may have raised the question of DNC bias during the primaries. That served a number of purposes. One was to put the issue of possible bias before the public and signal to the Committee and its Chairman the need to be more even handed. Simultaneously it energized campaign workers by underscoring the insurgent nature of the Sanders effort.
But the nomination fight is now over. As far as I can tell the emails provide no clear evidence of prejudicial rulings or procedural maneuvers by the DNC or its staff that damaged the Sanders’ campaign. Even if such activity had occurred there is nothing in either the Committee’s Charter or Bylaws that would prohibit such behavior.
The truth is that as George McGovern proved many years ago and the Sanders campaign came close to proving again this year, the nomination goes to the candidate that wins the primaries and the caucuses regardless of the preferences of the Committee, its Chairperson or staff. In fact, I would argue there is very little the DNC could do to influence delegate selection even if it openly attempted to do so.
In my judgement, the biases of a Chairman and staff should be kept within bounds but depoliticizing the committee of a national party is neither realistic nor practical. Certainly exchanging personal candidate preferences in private emails is not outside reasonable boundaries and it is certainly not practical to attempt to prohibit such behavior.
If Senator Sanders held a different vision on the role of the party and its National Committee prior to declaring his candidacy, perhaps he should have made joined the party earlier and push for bylaws that expressed that perspective.

5 Steps To Dump Your ‘Lack-Mentality’ And Unleash Your Authenticity

2016-07-25-1469478020-1186244-DumpYourLackMentalityUnleashYourAuthenticity.jpg

Last weekend was a big weekend for me. I TURNED 50. I still can’t believe it because growing up I always thought of being 50 years old as being downright OLD. I joked that my old age will become official when I get my first AARP postcard in the mail. Seriously, I didn’t want to make a big deal about turning 50. We kept my birthday small and quiet just the way I wanted. Last weekend was filled with mixed feelings and emotions. While I was happy to celebrate my birthday with my family and close friends and I was also scared of going to my very first National Speaker’s Association New England board meeting retreat.

From Yes to Yikes
Turning 50 was a breeze because I prepared myself for it. All year long, I wrote about it and kidded with people about it. However, becoming a board member was a different story. The only thing that helped prepare me for this role was volunteering for the chapter. I love this chapter because I have gained so much from it. Not only has it helped me network with local professional speakers but I have also learned their best practices. This year I was honored to be asked to be a part of the board and to chair the auction committee–the BIGGEST fundraising event for the chapter. After being flattered and saying “yes,” the monumental task quickly sunk in. My “yes” instantly became a “yikes!”

Monkey-Mind
In hindsight, I smile now at how worried I was before attending the board retreat. My nervousness made a mountain out of a mole-hill. My concern and fear of failing the chapter from lack of experience and lack of knowledge got the best of me. My “lack-mentality” went on overdrive. Needless to say, I didn’t sleep much last weekend because my monkey-mind made me bananas and kept me up at night. Why is it that our fear-based voices sound the loudest and rule our mind when our body is trying to sleep? Aargh!

“What if you say something stupid?”
“What if someone doesn’t think you are good enough to be a board member?”
“What if you don’t know the answers to their questions?”

Not Good Enough
I thought that a couple of the benefits of aging were having confidence and wisdom. I felt far from having that last weekend. If anything, my old insecure mind came back to challenge my older 50-year old self. My old limiting beliefs of not being “good enough” worked overtime. As a Health and Happiness Specialist™, who speaks on the topic of happiness skills and using the power of intuition to help people become the best version of themselves, I didn’t feel too healthy nor happy. If anything, I was exhausted and very unhappy because I didn’t sleep much and worried too much.

I Got Over the Hill
I had to snap out of this negative state. The best way to do it was to practice what I preach. I practiced gratitude. The more I did, the better I felt. Instead of dwelling on what I lacked, I focused on what I had. I started to focus on all the good things that were happening that weekend. They were: spending special time with my sisters and my mother for high-tea, a celebration that they did for me when I turned 40, sleeping over an old high school friend’s house and having quality time with both him and his partner, lastly driving a scenic route by the water to get to the board president’s house. I focused on the great opportunity that lay ahead of me. I focused on the people who love me. Focusing on these good things made me feel a better.

The Dump Truck
When the morning finally came to drive to the meeting, I got stuck behind a dump truck. “Oh no, this will slow me down and possibly make me late!” The last thing I needed was to arrive at the meeting late and give everyone there the wrong impression of me from the start. Then my small voice from within reminded me to continue looking for the good. My logical mind asked, “What’s good about driving behind a dump truck.”
My inner voice replied, “Pretend that it’s a sign to help you dump your troubles.”
“Try dumping your worries into it.”
“Keep dumping any past, present, and future fears into it.”
“Keep dumping until you run out of things to throw away.”

Ready for Action
That’s what I did! The more I released and let go of what was bothering me and holding me back, the happier I felt. It was as though a huge load had been lifted from my mind and heart. I felt like a new person. I felt awesome! And as if the driver knew when I was done using it as my mental and emotional elimination truck, it turned one way and I turned the other. I’m so grateful that I knew enough to follow the wisdom of my inner voice. As mentioned in my book, The Happiness Result, our inner voice is like our inner GPS. It’s tuned into our heart and knows how to take us from feeling awful to feeling amazing. All we have to do is listen to it and trust in its guidance. Following the instructions of my inner voice led me to embracing my authenticity and accepting who I was and what I had to offer. What I have come to know all my life is that my inner GPS will never lead me astray.

I Have Arrived
When I pulled up in front of the board president’s home, I felt calm, confident, and more than capable to perform my new role. I was ready for action. During the day-long retreat I felt welcomed, appreciated and heard. I made creative “out of the box” suggestions that the long time board members liked, made new connections with the board members, and blew out a candle on a surprise birthday chocolate treat the president had for me. I drove home feeling better than I could have ever imagined that day. I felt proud of what I did and what I can offer to the board and the chapter.

Trash Day
It’s your turn to throw away any old baggage that has been keeping you from being happy and letting your light shine. Try this simple process. The 5 Steps to Dump Your “Lack Mentality” & Unleash Your Authenticity will surely get you started on the right path to better health and happiness.

Step 1: Use Gratitude. Look for the good and what’s working. This is an instant positivity booster.

Step 2. Check in. Ask yourself the following question. “What’s been keeping me up at night?”

Step 3: Patience. Be patient and tune into the answers that come from your inner voice.

Step 4: Faith. Trust the supportive answer that comes and take action.

Step 5. Trash it. Throw away as many limiting beliefs and thought patterns that emerge as a result of this exercise. Keep going until you feel better.

These five steps are a great way to unleash your authenticity. What I am quickly learning at this stage of my life is that no matter how old we are, life will always have a way of stretching us; ensuring that we continue to grow and flourish into the best version of ourselves. The 5 Steps to Dump Your “Lack Mentality” & Unleash Your Authenticity is my special gift to you to help you prepare for whatever life has to bring you. These Cleveland Produce Distributors Are Taking Food Waste Into Their Own Hands

While Republicans failed to name helping the environment as one of its top concerns during the party’s convention in Cleveland last week, eliminating food waste is still a priority for the city ― particularly at the Forest City Weingart Produce Company.

The produce distributor’s president, Andy Weingart, and his wife, Ashley, told The Huffington Post that they used to discard perfectly edible produce because grocery stores have such high cosmetic standards for the fruits and vegetables they sell. So the couple launched the Perfectly Imperfect initiative in May to give people in the Cleveland area the opportunity to buy ugly produce at affordable prices.

“There’s a certain standard that a lot of chain grocery stores have for the product that comes through their doors,” Weingart said. “So, some of the items that we’re including in our imperfect box wouldn’t qualify to meet their standards, which is why we’re choosing them to put in this box.”

Shoppers can sign up to have a box of aesthetically imperfect seasonal produce delivered to their homes weekly or biweekly. The boxes are $ 15 or $ 25 apiece, depending on the size. It’s also possible to donate a box of produce to a local family in need.

The initiative helps curb the 1.3 billion tons of food waste produced annually and the billions of pounds of produce that grocery stores discard simply because of aesthetic standards.

“We started looking at these items that didn’t meet the specs of the primary end user, and thought, ‘OK, who can use these?,’” Weingart said. “And Ashley was smart enough to come up with this idea and said, ‘You know, there is a need for this.’”

Sorting through produce to identify what can be distributed through the Perfectly Imperfect initiative takes extra work, but Weingart said it’s worth it to help cut back on food waste.

“There’s someone, somewhere, that wants a tomato that looks like it has a nose on it, or an eggplant that looks like it’s got an ear poking out of it,” he said.

The Risk Factor

Hillary Clinton’s choice of Tim Kaine as her running mate is being described as “safe.” Safe is not exciting. But it offers a powerful contrast with Donald Trump.

Trump is high risk. “A Trump presidency would be dangerous for the nation and the world,” the Washington Post declared in a scathing editorial. Risk is a longstanding issue in American politics. It explains one of its enduring features: the gender gap.

Women, on the average, are more risk-averse than men. According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, fewer than 7 percent of prison inmates are women. Crime always entails risk, and women tend to be more cautious — and smarter — about risk-taking than men are.

Why does that lead women to support Democrats? Because Democrats are committed to protecting the safety net. Republicans appeal to men who are drawn to risk-taking and competition. Sports and business are stereotypically men’s worlds.

Trump comes from one of the riskiest sectors of the business world — real-estate development. Many of his ventures have succeeded but some have gone bust. Four of his companies have declared bankruptcy.

Trump’s acceptance speech at last week’s Republican National Convention tried to convey a promise of security. “My plan will begin with safety at home,” he said, “which means safe neighborhoods, secure borders and protection from terrorism.” That’s a message voters, particularly women, should find reassuring.

But the tone of his speech was anything but reassuring. It was alarmist. Trump described “a moment of crisis for our nation” when “the attacks on our police and the terrorism in our cities threaten our very way of life.”

Trump may have given the angriest acceptance speech ever delivered by a major party candidate. “This is the legacy of Hillary Clinton,” he declared. “Death, destruction, terrorism and weakness.”

When Richard Nixon gave his acceptance speech at the 1968 Republican convention, it was a far darker time in America — assassinations, the war in Vietnam, student protests, racial violence. Nixon promised to accept the challenge “not as a grim duty but as an exciting adventure in which we are privileged to help a great nation realize its destiny.”

1980 was another dark moment — out-of-control inflation, energy shortages, a hostage crisis. But that year, Ronald Reagan offered Republicans a very unTrumplike message: “Can we doubt that only a divine providence placed this land, this island of freedom, here as a refuge for all those people in the world who yearn to breathe freely?”

Nothing in Trump’s speech can be described as inspiring or uplifting. It was certainly not Reaganesque.

Clinton has denounced Trump as “temperamentally unfit” to be President. She said last month, “It’s very easy to imagine Donald Trump leading us into a war just because someone got under his very thin skin. We cannot let him roll the dice with America.” Rolling the dice means taking big risks.

Trump’s response was typically snarling and abusive. “She brings up temperament because she understands temperament because her temperament is terrible.”

Then there are Trump’s rash and ill-advised policies — building a border wall, deporting 11 million illegal immigrants, torturing suspected terrorists, threatening a trade war. Proposals like that may lead some men to pump their fists, but many women are likely to see them as reckless. And risky. The Post’s editors call Trump’s ideas “a threat to the Constitution.”

All indications are that the gender gap will grow to unprecedented proportions this year. In the NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll, Hillary Clinton enjoys a 17-point lead over Trump among women. Four years ago, women gave Barack Obama an 11-point lead over Mitt Romney. The Republican lead among men seems to be widening as well, from 7 points for Romney in 2012 to 10 points for Trump this year.

An obvious reason is the unprecedented nomination of a woman for President. But Trump himself is a walking gender gap. Particularly when he lapses into self-aggrandizement: “Nobody knows the system better than me, which is why I alone can fix it.”

There’s the men’s locker room talk. On Saturday, Trump described ousted media mogul Roger Ailes, who faces accusations of sexual harassment, as “a great guy” and a man who helped women at Fox News who are now “complaining.”

Tim Kaine said in 2012 that he and his wife “both decided early on that reconciliation would be the mission of our lives.” According to the New York Times, Kaine’s Senate colleagues consider him “self-effacing” with a “calm, even temperament.” Those are terms that could never be used to describe Donald Trump.

2016-07-22-1469207541-594798-11780058_10153129790107149_3221575478209974355_o.jpg

“The world has gone crazy!”

“People have lost their minds!”

“It’s not a safe place!”

“The world is going to hell in a hand basket!”

SO.MUCH.FEAR.

How about instead of getting sucked up into that vortex, we dial up the frequency of Love?

Yes, there is a lot of upheaval, chaos, if you will. And instead of trying to control it and being afraid of it, we can look at it for what it is:

The perfect unfolding in which many blessings lie. The new paradigm emerging as the old ones crumble.

It’s all good.

Fear, scarcity and lack are not sustainable anymore. That’s why it’s showing up more than ever. It’s fighting for it’s last breath. It’s always been there – all the horrors that are happening around the world – we just know where it lives now.

It’s in our face.

Why?

Because we are waking up!

I learned that in space when light expands and hits darkness, there is initial friction when they meet before light expands some more.

So, shine on and embrace the friction, knowing that on a grander scale, everything is playing out as it should for one simple reason…

To restore balance and harmony.

Does that rub you the wrong way?

Ah, there’s the friction.

Do you want to defend the limitations of being right? After all, there’s so many stories to support why the world has gone mad. Just turn on the news, read the paper, or log in to the social networks.

Instead, dare to Love even when it seems impossible or even when it feels wrong – after all, shouldn’t we be raging when yet another act of violence has been reported across the globe? Doesn’t that show we care? So, how can we love when atrocities are happening around the world?

How can we not?

I do know from experience that Love is the most powerful frequency on the planet and it’s always there because it’s all there is. We are conduits for that frequency. We can at any moment choose to allow Love to flow through us.

Talk about true power.

Ask yourself how it feels and what it looks like to dial up the frequency of Love when, in that moment, you want to react and post away on social media the expression of your rage.

Pause and pay attention to what comes up for you.

I definitely have my reactions to what’s happening in the world and I have my feelings about it. When I’m triggered, I step away and deal with my emotions first. I allow them to show me what it is I’m really upset about.

I check in with myself before I post anything. Am I coming from a place of Love? If not, I do not post.

These are extraordinary times to be living on the planet. Extraordinary times to be choosing Love.

So no matter what’s happening around you, I dare you to dial up the frequency of Love.

And then pay attention to what happens.

Because, as a friend of mine always says, “It’s all good.”

And it is.

Study Finds Drop In Prescription Drugs In Medical Marijuana States

States looking for a way to reduce Medicare spending and prescription drug use may want to turn to legalizing medical marijuana, a new study suggests.

The District of Columbia and the 17 states that had medical marijuana as an alternative to prescription drugs in 2013 saved an estimated total of $ 165.2 million in Medicare program and enrollee spending that year, researchers at the University of Georgia reported in the journal Health Affairs this month.

“The results suggest that if all states had implemented medical marijuana the overall savings to Medicare would have been around $ 468 million,” a press release on the findings stated.

The researchers looked at prescriptions filled by Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (or Part D) enrollees from 2010 to 2013. They then narrowed the prescriptions down to ones that could be substituted with medical marijuana. Those prescriptions were for ailments that included anxiety, depression, glaucoma, nausea, pain, psychosis, seizures, sleep disorders and spasticity.

Their results found that there were fewer prescriptions filled for the majority of those categories. The pain category, for instance, saw a decrease in 1,826 daily doses, while the depression category saw a 265 daily dosage decrease.

As the researchers noted in their release, they specifically looked at glaucoma patients’ use of marijuana.

“It turns out that glaucoma is one of the most Googled searches linked to marijuana, right after pain,” Dr. David Bradford of the university’s School of Public & International Affairs, who co-authored the report, stated in the university’s release.

The eye disease can be extremely painful and lead to blindness for some patients. Those sufferers who use marijuana, however, can experience a 25 percent decrease in eye pressure that’s caused by the condition, according to the release.

The relief provided by marijuana only lasts about 60 minutes, however, and expecting patients to take it once an hour is considered “unrealistic,” they concluded. Because of that, they stated that they fully expected prescription drug use to remain strong for the disease even when marijuana was an available alternative.

As the university’s release notes, “they were not disappointed.”

Though there were fewer drug prescriptions written for the other ailments, the daily doses of prescribed glaucoma medications increased, they stated.

That led them to believe that medical marijuana users are not requesting prescriptions just to enjoy a high, but are basing their decision on medical needs.

“The results suggest people are really using marijuana as medicine and not just using it for recreational purposes,” the study’s lead author, Ashley Bradford, who completed her bachelor’s degree in sociology in May, said in a statement.

Speaking in a recent YouTube interview, Bradford expressed hope “that this research will influence and reform policymaking.”

Decreasing Americans’ use of prescription drugs may not just be of monetary benefit, but depending on the type of drug, could help fight Americans’ addiction to prescription painkillers as well.

The U.S. is in the midst of an opioid overdose epidemic, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In 2014 alone, opioids ― including prescription opioid pain relievers and heroin ― killed more than 28,000 people, more than any year on record. At least half of all those deaths involved a prescription opioid.

“We now know that overdoses from prescription opioid pain relievers are a driving factor in the 15-year increase in opioid overdose deaths,” the CDC states on their website. “Since 1999, the amount of prescription opioids sold in the U.S. nearly quadrupled, yet there has not been an overall change in the amount of pain that Americans report.”

Three of the most common prescription drugs involved in opioid overdose deaths were methadone, oxycodone and hydrocodone.

Today, 25 states and Washington, D.C., have some form of legalized medical marijuana.

Tamir Rice’s Neighborhood: A Short Drive But Far Removed From Trump’s RNC

CLEVELAND ― The snow has long melted. The police car’s muddy tracks are gone. There’s a colorful new garden. Kids play at a water park around the corner, a few dozens teens are playing basketball inside the gym and some children watch adults wearing tie-die lab coats conduct an experiment with liquid nitrogen. A toy red Nerf Rival Apollo Blaster that shoots small yellow foam balls lays in the grass near the pavilion, a few feet from some wooden crosses. A pile of stuffed animals ― teddy bears, Snoopy, a turtle ― sit on a table near the spot where a Cleveland police office shot and killed 12-year-old Tamir Rice less than two seconds after he encountered him at a playground on Nov. 22, 2014.

A short car ride away, at the Quicken Loans Arena, Donald Trump became the Republican presidential nominee on Thursday. People in militia gear carrying semi-automatic rifles posed for photos with onlookers near the arena this week, as police on bikes focused on keeping the religious extremists and the anarchists apart. Inside, a massive crowd chanted “All Lives Matter,” a guy in a Trump hat carried around a sign that said “ISIS Lives Don’t Matter,” and a sheriff who has become a fixture in the conservative media drew thunderous applause by declaring that “Blue Lives Matter.” This is amid one of the safest times to be a police officer in recorded history in a country where the government pours billions of dollars into supporting cops and protecting their valued lives. Trump’s message of safety seemed aimed at a particular audience and not necessarily families that look like look like Tamir’s, as Charles M. Blow pointed out in The New York Times this week.

During his lengthy acceptance speech, the former reality TV personality painted a picture of an America in crisis, where violent crime was spiking (it isn’t) and proclaimed himself to be the only man who could fix it.Those I spoke with on the floor of the Republican National Convention were convinced that America was getting more dangerous. This is despite violent crime rate data showing that every year of the Obama administration has been safer than any year during the presidency of George W. Bush. But people didn’t feel that fact was true. Trump’s own campaign manager even suggested that the FBI ― currently run by a former Bush administration official who had been registered as Republican and donated to GOP campaigns ― must be cooking the books on crime to make President Barack Obama look better.

When I sat down at the bench under the pavilion at the Cudell Recreation Center that appeared in the video of Tamir’s death, I realized I too may have created a false narrative in my own mind based on, videos and media reports. Much like the violent country Trump created before an audience of millions on Thursday night, the tough neighborhood I’d created in my head to fill in the world outside the limited scope of the surveillance camera that captured Tamir’s final moments did not exist. Take away the handful of reporters and cameras that stopped by and the members of the communist Progressive Labor Party who came to recruit and the park where Tamir was killed looked a lot like one I would visit with my own young daughter.

It’s tough for an out-of-town journalist to drop into a neighborhood in a city he’s never visited before for a few hours and walk away with anything meaningful to say, and I won’t pretend to do so here. But nearly two years ago, when I arrived in Ferguson, Missouri, a few days after the police shooting death of Michael Brown, I was struck by how little the area and the situation resembled the narrative I had formed in my mind based on what I had pieced together from news coverage and social media. When I saw heavily armored officers pointing weapons during demonstrations ― a part of me assumed there had to be some sort of legitimate threat behind the camera, when that was often not the case.

This time, however, working with The Huffington Post’s RYOT team, I had the ability to allow readers to see a fuller, 360-degree picture of what I saw when I visited the park where Tamir was shot. It gives a much fuller view of the location beyond grainy surveillance footage.

Among those I met was Robert Hargrove, a 66-year-old man who lives in the neighborhood. He was watching his grandchildren play in the park and told me he often went there. (Indeed, he spoke with a reporter from Gawker at the park the previous day). After his four-year-old grandson pointed to the location where Tamir was shot (or at least the spot where he knew something significant had happened), Hargrove told me he knew from the beginning that nothing would happen to the officers involved in the boy’s shooting. Indeed, a grand jury declined to indict an officer for Tamir’s death in December. After the City of Cleveland agreed in April to pay his family more than $ 6 million while admitting no wrongdoing, a police union official then suggested the money should go toward educating children on the dangers of real and replica weapons.

“I knew they wasn’t gonna do nothing to him. But after looking at the film, they should’ve did something. I don’t know what they see that I didn’t see,” Hargrove said. “I don’t trust them,” he said, referring to police officers. “I don’t trust them around my kids, I don’t trust them near my kids.”

Hargrove said he’s no Trump supporter, calling him a “trickster” who was dividing the country. “He’s being very, very honest, and its scares me,” Hargrove said. “It should scare a lot of us.”

He pointed out that the former reality TV personality is “talking about alienating Mexicans, blacks, Hispanics.”

“Until they do something about the racism, and this country finally really does something, it’s going to be the same,” Hargrove added. He’s “hopeful” that the presumptive Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton ― who has earned the endorsement of parents whose children police have killed, though not Tamir’s mother ― can bring about some change.

“I’m so hopeful, I’m not even listening to the Republican convention,” Hargrove said. “I’m not going to play off into that rhetoric. What does he know about being president? About as much as I know about being president. He’s a billionaire, but that don’t mean he knows how to run a country.”

11 Ways To Instantly Connect With Anyone

2016-07-21-1469128595-7816956-HowToInstantlyConnectWithAnyoneHP.jpg

Too many people succumb to the mistaken belief that the ability to connect with others is a natural, unteachable trait that belongs to only a lucky few. It’s easy to fall prey to this misconception. In reality, this ability is under your control, and it’s a matter of emotional intelligence (EQ).

Research conducted by Matthew Lieberman at UCLA shows that being social and connecting with others is as fundamental a human need as food, shelter, and water. For example, Lieberman discovered that we feel social pain, such as the loss of a relationship, in the same part of the brain that we feel physical pain.

The primary function of this brain area is to alert us to threats to our survival. It makes you realize how powerful and important social connection is. We’re hard wired to be social creatures.

“The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood.” -Ralph Nichols

MRIs of the brain show that social thinking and analytical thinking involve entirely different neural networks and that they operate something like a seesaw. When you engage in analytical thinking, the social part of your brain quiets down, but as soon as you’re finished, the social network springs back to life.

The social brain is the end of the seesaw where the fat kid sits; it’s our brain’s default setting.

Given that social connection is such a fundamental human need, you’d think that it would be easy to connect with everyone we meet. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Against our own self-interest, we get bogged down by shyness, self-consciousness, cynicism, pride, competitiveness, jealousy, and arrogance.

If you can get that baggage out of the way, you can connect with anyone–even those who are still holding on to their own. Here are some tips that will help you to connect instantly with everyone you meet.

1. Leave a strong first impression. Most people decide whether or not they like you within the first seven seconds of meeting you. They then spend the rest of the conversation internally justifying their initial reaction. This may sound terrifying, but by knowing this, you can take advantage of it to connect with anyone.

First impressions are tied intimately to positive body language. Becoming cognizant of your gestures, expressions, and tone of voice (and making certain they’re positive) will draw people to you like ants to a picnic. Using an enthusiastic tone, uncrossing your arms, maintaining eye contact, and leaning towards the person who’s speaking are all forms of positive body language that high-EQ people use to draw others in. Positive body language can make all the difference in a conversation. It’s true that how you say something can be more important than what you say.

2. Be the first to venture beyond the superficial. Our first conversation or two with a new acquaintance tends to be pretty superficial. We portray a careful picture of ourselves, and we stick to nice, safe topics. We talk about the weather and people we know in common and share the most basic details about ourselves. But if you really want to connect with somebody, try upping the ante and revealing the real you. You don’t need to get too personal, but it’s important to let the other person know what you’re passionate about. Most of the time, if you open up, the other person will follow your lead and do the same.

3. Ask good questions. If the other person seems hesitant to open up, encourage them to do so by asking substantial questions. “What do you do?” doesn’t further the relationship nearly as much as, “Why did you choose your profession?” Search for questions that will help you to understand what makes the other person tick, without getting too personal.

4. Learn from them. In the course of his research, Lieberman concluded that our educational system would be much more effective if we tapped into the social side of learning, rather than trying to squash it. For example, the best way to help an eighth-grader struggling with math would be to have him get help from another student. Apply that same principle to your life, and be willing to learn from the person you’re trying to connect with. Not only does that make them feel more bonded to you, it makes them feel important. It also shows that you’re willing to be vulnerable and aren’t too proud to admit that you have much to learn.

5. Don’t make them regret removing the mask. If your new acquaintance does you the honor of opening up, don’t make them regret it. Sarcasm, criticism, or jokes that might make the other person feel judged for what they’ve shared are major faux paus. Instead, empathize with their approach to life, which you can do even if you don’t agree with their beliefs, and then reciprocate by revealing more about yourself.

6. Look for the good in them. Our culture can often predispose us toward cynicism. We seem to focus on finding reasons not to like people instead of reasons to like them. Shut that cynical voice off, and concentrate on looking for the good in a new acquaintance. For one thing, that keeps you from writing someone off too soon, but more importantly, when you expect the best from people, they’re likely to deliver it.

7. Smile. People naturally (and unconsciously) mirror the body language of the person they’re talking to. If you want people to like you, smile at them during a conversation and they will unconsciously return the favor and feel good about you as a result.

8. Use their name. Your name is an essential part of your identity, and it feels terrific when people use it. You shouldn’t use someone’s name only when you greet them. Research shows that people feel validated when the person they’re speaking with refers to them by name during a conversation. When you meet someone, don’t be afraid to ask their name a second time if you forget it right after you hear it. You’ll need to keep their name handy if you’re going to remember it the next time you see them.

9. Follow the platinum rule. We all know the golden rule, and it’s pretty easy to follow. The platinum rule is harder to follow because it requires us to treat people the way they want to be treated. Not only does doing so make the other person more comfortable–and therefore more likely to open up–but it also proves that you’ve been listening and have really heard what they’ve been telling you. And that shows extra effort on your part.

10. Don’t make it a contest. We’ve all seen the stereotypical sit-com scene where two guys in a bar spend the night trying to one-up each other. The same thing happens when you meet someone new. Their accomplishments and life experience sneak up on you and make you feel the urge to make yourself look just as good (if not better). Doing so may stroke your ego, but it doesn’t help you to connect with them. It keeps you focused on yourself when you should be trying to learn about them and find common ground.

11. Turn off your inner voice. One giant thing that keeps us from connecting with other people is that we don’t really listen. Instead, we’re thinking while the other person is talking. We’re so focused on what we’re going to say next or how what the other person is saying is going to affect us down the road that we fail to hear what’s really being said. The words come through loud and clear, but the meaning is lost.

You must turn off this inner voice if you want to connect deeply with people. So what if you forget what you were going to say or if the conversation moves in a different direction before you have a chance to make your point. If your real goal is to connect with a person, you have to shut off your own soundtrack long enough to focus on what they’re telling you.

Bringing It All Together

The good news is that we’re programmed to connect with each other; we just keep getting in our own way. Try these tips the next time you meet someone new, and watch a superficial conversation turn into a real connection.

How do you connect with people? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

The One Habit For Better Sleep You Might Have Overlooked

2016-07-23-1469284338-2705449-Stocksy_GuilleFaingold.jpg

You know that sleep is essential for good health, and you’ve tried everything: munching on sleep-enhancing superfoods, banning screens from the bedroom, and getting sleep tips from Arianna Huffington (she’s serious about it).

But it turns out there’s a super easy, science-backed method for improving your snoozing, and it’s probably one you haven’t considered: sleeping naked. (Sounds great in this humidity, anyway!)

According to a report on The Cut, sleeping in the nude can help you clock those prescribed seven to eight hours and improve the quality of your zzz’s. So prepare to say adios to your trusty pajama set–it’s just not necessary.

Read on for three benefits of going to bed in the buff.

1. It’s cooler
According to a study by the University of Amsterdam, you get better–AKA deeper–sleep when you have a lower body temperature. So when your skin is cool from not wearing anything (ever felt the heavenly sensation of cold sheets?) it’ll be easier for your body to drift into a quality sleep. Added bonus: It’s cheaper than blasting your air conditioner.

2. It may boost your metabolism
A study done in 2014 showed that cool temperatures alter your body fat and metabolism. Lowering your body temperature by sleeping naked will do that, by burning calories as your body attempts to keep warm. It’s kind of like the best workout ever.

3. It helps with intimacy
Sleeping nude not only benefits your body–it can help with your relationship as well. Having intimacy issues? Hit the sack without any clothes on, which can trigger a release of oxytocin, AKA “the love hormone.”

And if nudity is not your thing, just make sure your PJs are made out of breathable material (bye, synthetics). The cooler you feel, the deeper you’ll sleep.

Why Twitter Lost Its Mind Over These ‘Hispanic Para Trump’ Signs

Spanish is the second-most spoken language in the country, even among non-Hispanics, but it seems someone at the 2016 Republican National Convention missed a class.

The Republican National Convention came to a close Thursday night with a speech by GOP nominee Donald Trump, but some people on Twitter were more preoccupied with the poorly translated “Hispanics Para Trump” signs some people in the crowd were holding up.

As The Hill first pointed out, the translation on the signs is not only incomplete but completely incorrect.

It seems that while attempting to translate “Hispanics for Trump,” the signs’ creators not only failed to translate Hispanics to the Spanish word, “Hispanos” but incorrectly used the word “para” instead of “por” to say “for.” Both words can mean “for” but are used differently.

It’s also fitting to note that “para” can mean “stop” in Spanish.

While it can be easy to confuse the word “para” and “por,” there is certainly a grammatical difference. The Huffington Post reached out to NYU lecturer Félix Manuel Burgos, who happens to have a Ph. D in Hispanic Linguistics, to explain:

If you want to express support for someone with your vote, it should be “por.” That is the preposition that goes with the verb “votar.”

“Para” doesn’t make sense in that context, unless you work for him, that is the preposition that goes with “trabajar.” … [But] actually the best option would have been “con,” that expresses general support. “Latinos con Trump.” But I don’t think they will print many of those signs.

Reuters reporter Rodrigo Campos was just one of the many Twitter users to recognize the flub.

Others questioned whether the people holding the “Hispanics para Trump” signs were Hispanic, at all. Though it’s important to note that as an ethnicity, it is possible to be both white and Hispanic.

Regardless of who is doing the sign holding, someone has some reprinting to do. We’d warn against using Google Translate in the future, but we checked and even Google Translate knows the difference between “para” and “por.”

WATCH: Refocus (Getting Back on Track)

There are a lot of things going on that are demanding our focus – and take us away from where we can be most powerful and do the most good for ourselves and others. I hope this will help.

If you are new to tapping, it will be beneficial to also watch the first episode in the “Tap Out Your Fears” series — which explains the basics of EFT — click here.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) In any event, this brief video should help at least take the edge off the discomfort, freeing you up to enjoy life much more. Let us know how it helped you!

Tapping can sometimes bring up long-buried emotions, which is why I state that, before tapping along, folks must take full responsibility for their own well-being. For more information about that, please read this disclaimer.

Florida Tests About 200 In The Search For Local Zika Virus Infections

By Julie Steenhuysen

CHICAGO (Reuters) – Health authorities in Florida have tested about 200 people for the Zika virus as part of the state’s investigation of two possible cases of infections not related to travel to a region hit by an outbreak, officials said on Friday.

Florida’s health department this week began looking into what may be the first cases in the United States of Zika, a mosquito-borne virus that has spread rapidly through Latin America and the Caribbean, caused by the bite of a local mosquito.

All prior cases of Zika in the United States have been linked with travel to a country where the virus is circulating or to sex with someone who has done such travel.

Health experts in the United States have been watching closely for the arrival of Zika, which has been shown to cause a birth defect called microcephaly marked by small heads and undersized brains that can cause severe developmental problems.

Florida health officials have urged people in the areas being investigated to provide blood and urine samples if requested.

”The department’s investigations into the possible non-travel related Zika virus cases in Miami-Dade and Broward counties are ongoing and the department will share more details as they become available,” the department said in a statement. “To date, approximately 200 people have been interviewed and tested as part of the department’s investigations and we await additional lab results.”

On Tuesday, Florida said it was investigating a possible Zika case in a Miami-Dade County woman. The case is suspected to be non-travel related, but as of Thursday the state had not ruled out travel or sex as a potential cause of her infection, according to a spokeswoman.

Late on Thursday, Florida also announced a potential Zika case in Broward County that was not related to travel.

Florida has invited the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to assist in the probe, and CDC senior medical epidemiologist Dr. Marc Fischer arrived on Friday.

To determine whether a case was caused by local transmission, health workers need to survey households and neighbors within a 150-yard (137 meters) radius of an infected person’s residence, Fischer said at a CDC workshop on Thursday.

He said that was basically the flying radius of the mosquitoes that spread Zika.

More than 400 pregnant women in the continental United States have evidence of Zika virus infection, and 12 infants have been born with birth defects linked to Zika infections in their mothers, officials have said.

Biochar Solution

Biochar Solution

Conventional agriculture destroys our soils, pollutes our water and is a major contributor to climate change. What if our agricultural practices could stabilize, or even reverse these trends? The Biochar Solution explores the dual function of biochar as a carbon-negative energy source and a potent soil-builder. Created by burning biomass in the absence of oxygen, this material has the unique ability to hold carbon back from the atmosphere while simultaneously enhancing soil fertility. Author Albert Bates traces the evolution of this extraordinary substance from the ancient black soils of the Amazon to its reappearance as a modern carbon sequestration strategy. Combining practical techniques for the production and use of biochar with an overview of the development and future of carbon farming, The Biochar Solution describes how a new agricultural revolution can reduce net greenhouse gas emissions to below zero while increasing world food reserves and creating energy from biomass wastes. Biochar and carbon farming can: * Reduce fossil fuels inputs into our food system * Bring new life to desert landscapes * Filter and purify drinking water * Help build carbon-negative homes, communities and nations. Biochar is not without dangers if unregulated, and it is not a panacea, but if it fulfills its promise of taking us back from the brink of irreversible climate change, it may well be the most important discovery in human history.

#1 Pro-Choice Anti-Pence Movement Rally Ever

2016-07-20-1468977859-5198519-somethingheredoesntbelong.jpg

The Best Pro-Choice Anti-Pence Movement Rally Ever

Right before George W. Bush came up with the first legitimate reason to burn a book — a memoir called “The Decider” — he told NBC anchor Matt Lauer that, as young man, his mother showed him an old jar containing the fetus of her stillborn child. Later, to make that seem less psychotic and to clear up any questions, Barbara Bush explained that it was her housekeeper who actually canned George Zygote Bush. Which really makes a person wonder where the hell the housekeeper was dusting when she came across it. “Oh Lord,” she might have sighed while scooping out the litter box, “The governess misplaced another lovely fetus. I’d better see if there are any Ball jars left in the pickling cabinet.”

That wouldn’t happen today, not in Indiana, where the governor recently signed into law legislation designed not only to make abortion more traumatizing and harder to obtain, but also to freak the crap out of women whose bodies naturally reject a zygote or fetus. Today, Barbara would have to provide that jar a proper burial at her own expense. As do women who elect to have an abortion today at that remaining Indiana clinic (probably located near Ice Station Zero in Antarctica). It’s a little like the Chinese policy that requires the nearest kin to pay for the bullet used to kill a condemned prisoner.

This bill, HEA 1337, which Governor Pence signed into law at the end of March stipulates mandatory burial or cremation as well as some guidelines that seem designed only to bewilder alien historians and archeologists a few centuries down the road.

Highlights include:

  • A woman considering abortion because the fetus has been diagnosed with a lethal anomaly must first be counseled on the benefits of perinatal fetal hospice. (The law also directs the state to make a brochure about that.)
  • The law prohibits a person from performing an abortion if the person knows that the pregnant woman is seeking the abortion solely because of race, Down syndrome or any other disability. (Good to know that race is bundled in with disabilities in Indiana.)
  • Mandatory ultrasound 18 hours prior to electing an abortion, of course.
  • A miscarried or aborted fetus must be preserved until it can be interred or cremated – even if the pregnancy was so early in term that it amounts to little more than clotted blood.

There’s a lot more vaginal madness in that bill, if you want to check it out yourself. But in all fairness, the law mercifully spells out that zygotes do not require to be named before internment. No names, just ceremonial disposal. And they can be cremated in batches if the mother needs to take advantage of a volume discount. How thoughtful.

Plus, no names will cover tracks of Indiana funeral homes that have had a few problems with fetus funerals – like the one that just shoved a few in the ceiling. And, leaving no evidence, Indiana can dodge the United Nations, which declared in January that, regarding abortion:

… subjecting women and girls to humiliating and judgmental attitudes in such contexts of extreme vulnerability and where timely healthcare is essential amount to torture or ill treatment …

In any event, these new laws always lead to groups of protesting voters holding picket signs, making scripted phone calls, signing petitions and demanding to get their Supreme Court sanctioned rights back. Surely this is happening in Indiana, but the women of Hoosier Ville are also responding in what might be the most creative pro-choice protest ever.

Someone who is remaining anonymous started a Facebook page called Periods for Pence, a call to action for all women to contact the good Governor with progress reports on their baby making. And they the women of Indiana are responding, and many are reporting their conversations on that Facebook page:

Them: “Good Morning, Governor Pence’s office”

Me: “Good Morning. I just wanted to inform the Governor that things seem to be drying up today. No babies seem to be up in there. Okay?”

I was just writing to see where I should send my used tampons. You know, since it’s a collection of human cells that could have created a life. Also, will the Governor’s office be covering postage?

Me: Hello, this is Sue Magina again. I just hit a pothole on I-70. It was a doozy! I’m worried it might have shaken something around up in there, and I wanted to make sure that was addressed in this new abortion law. I knew Governor Pence would be worried. Thanks.

I tried to call to let him know that I have a shallow vagina and my husband is doing his part but I’m not sure his sperm is reaching my egg. I wanted to ask him his thoughts on shallow vaginas and the best position we should be having sex in so I can get pregnant, or at least have a really good orgasm. Should I have a vagina implant, and if so, does he know anyone with a long vagina that would be willing to swap?

I don’t have a period anymore. Do you think it OK I call his office to discuss the Oxford comma? If not, then how a period should be followed by two spaces not one. One space is some internet thing. Glad Pence is on the case. Can’t have too many unschool gynoticians.

Hello my name is Flo…

The group is not limiting itself to phones and online media protests – members have brought to the mix their right to assemble. Recently they held and event they’ve named “Color Your Junk for Mike Pence,” where they gathered to color in pages from a sex education coloring book – and then mail the pages to him. Kim Saylor, the organizer, told the press: “We want Gov. Pence to have enough information to act as ‘Dr. Pence’ for ourselves and our fellow Hoosiers. By providing him with a chance to examine depictions of our reproductive systems, we hope he’ll gain much needed insight.”

This is a noble effort by the protesters and is undoubtedly driving employees at the office of the Governor toward nervous breakdowns. But as they leap over the edge, they should remember that the problem isn’t the protesters. It’s the American madness of crowds that keeps electing men who are obsessed with female reproduction.

In Indiana, more than 16% of the population live below the poverty line, compared to the 9% of pregnancies that ended in abortion. If that sounds like a lot, consider that, in numbers, abortion is a decision that only 1,440 of 6,500,000 people in the state of Indian face each year. There are bigger issues out there.

Charles Mackay, in his classic book “Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds,” states that:

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, one by one.

The women of Indiana are leveraging that maxim. And they starting with one man named Pence. And if he becomes the Vice President, we’re all going to have to get out our coloring books.

My Best Friend Is 20 Years Older Than Me, Here’s What I’ve Learned

My best friend is a Filipino with kids as old as me.

It also doesn’t help that she’s female and I’m male.

Now pay attention. I want you to notice what you think about this. I want you to notice what your immediate assumptions are. Do you believe me? Are you not sure? Do you think I must be lying?

Most of the time society assumes the worst.

They think we MUST be in a relationship. We MUST be hiding it from absolutely everybody. But no matter how much dirt my friends or her friends try to dig out, they still come up empty-handed every time.

That’s because there’s nothing happening.

You know what we do? We do things that normal friends would. We sit and talk. We laugh about work. We confide and trust one another. We go out. The chemistry that everyone else sees is so easily mistaken for love, but that’s just because we know each other so well.

I can’t tell you how this happened. The stars aligned and for some reason we had the perfect amount of compatibility. But if you think about it you’ll see why we’re compatible. I’m 23 and I’m very much open to everything. I want to learn from the experience of everyone.

What better way to learn about life than to talk to someone twice my age from another country? And guess what? I’ve learned more than you can ever imagine. It’s the lessons that I’ve learned from this wonderful person that have shaped my decisions for the past year.

She told me one thing, and that was to stay single and enjoy life while I can. She got married when she was 21 and wished she could’ve done things over. I’m currently out in San Francisco, writing in my blog and travelling the United States. I owe it all to her.

The bigger point is that society is too often focused on the wrong things–like age, gender, race, and background. It’s for this reason that our growth as human beings becomes stunted. We only hang out with those our age who want to party and fall in love on a whim. Why not become friends with someone older? Why not learn about the implications of a divorce and marrying early and having children?

There’s a whole wealth of experience that we’re missing out on. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Many of my friends rushed to get married before they got to travel outside of their own state. I know from my experience with my best friend that this might not always be the best plan of action.

I learned so much from her.

I learned that being 40 doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun like you’re 21. I learned that being a single parent demands a departure from how you acted before a divorce. I learned patience. I learned that there’s a point where friends become family. I learned that Filipino people have the best hospitality.

My decision to commit social suicide by being seen with a woman twice my age in public paid dividends for me that I’ll continue to reap for years to come.

Friendships can be weird, but I’m convinced that it’s the most beautiful thing human beings are capable of creating. Don’t limit yourself because of what people may think. I say, go for it.

Medical Errors Are The Third Leading Cause Of Death — How You Can Avoid Them

It is astonishing that medical errors are the third leading cause of death in America. The most recent data indicates that 251,000 deaths are due to medical errors, a frightening number. Every person should be concerned about this.

In 1999, the Institute of Medicine published that 98,000 deaths occurred annually due to medical errors. This was just an estimate and of course they suggested more studies to confirm this.

Recently, investigators at Johns Hopkins Medical Center updated those 1999 figures. They reviewed 4 studies of patients from throughout America between 2000 and 2008, representing over 37 million admissions to hospitals. Medical errors included mistake in medication administration (too much, too little, or given to the wrong patient), incorrect medical plan (patients got the wrong plan for their illness), failure in executing an order, physicians’ omitting something that should have been done or ordered doing something incorrect, and medical actions that did not produce the intended benefit for the patients.

Fatal errors occurred in 0.71% of these hospital admissions. This percent seems small, but it means that among all hospital admissions in America, 251,000 patients would die annually. And to put this in perspective, 614,000 patients die from heart disease and 591,000 from cancer, making medical errors the third leading cause of death. More people die from medical errors than from lung diseases (147,000 deaths), from stroke (133,000 deaths) or from accidents (136,000 deaths).

In another study at Massachusetts General Hospital, one of the nation’s best medical centers, 45% of all surgeries from 2013 to 2014 had drug errors or unintended drug side effects. These included incorrect labeling or dose, or medications ordered but not give. Astonishingly, there was a medication error in 1 of every 20 medications, and about 1 of every 2 surgical operations.

To make these estimates even more frightening, the studies did not include patients receiving outpatient care in their doctors’ offices. Even additional errors, a few of them fatal, probably occur in non-hospital settings. But we have not data to precisely estimate this risk.

What can patients do to protect themselves? Here are Dr. Cary’s suggestions for you.
• Be certain you have a good physician who will answer all your questions and will give you detailed advice.
• In preparing for surgery, you should ask your surgeon about her/his experience with the operation that is planned: how many does she/he do, what is the complication rate, and what is the mortality rate. Ask what steps will be taken to prevent any medical errors.
• If you are not satisfied with the answers, get a second opinion before any surgery is done. For advice on when and where to get second opinions, see my website and book Surviving American Medicine.
• At the hospital, check every medication you are given to be sure it is your medicine, and you know why it is being given.
• Before surgery, personally meet the anesthesiologist and ask what measures she/he will take to avoid errors. Be sure the physician, rather than just a nurse, is giving your anesthesia.
• And if you are having an operation on an arm or leg or breast, take the time to write on the arm (or leg or breast) “this one” and on the other “not this one”. Silly maybe, but better to be safe than sorry!
• When any physician tells you what will be done to help you treat any condition, be certain to ask what alternatives exist and what the benefits and risks of each treatment will be. Get a list of all side effects of any new medication that is prescribed.
• Check with the pharmacist to be sure that no adverse or dangerous interactions may occur between a new medicine you will receive and all other prescriptions and even over-the-counter pills you are taking.
• Review your condition on the internet to get trusted information about the illness, usual treatments, and side effects. The more information you can take to your doctor, the better the questions you can ask and the better your care will be. For a list of trusted internet sites for any condition, see my website and book Surviving American Medicine.
• Remember to have another person (family member or friend) with you in the medical office or in the hospital to be certain all questions have been asked and answered, and that you understand everything.
• Review your medical records. Your physician probably has an electronic health record with your health information and latest visit note. Your hospital can provide you with copies of your physician and consultant notes from your admission. Read these carefully, because any errors (in family history, medications, allergies, past illnesses, treatments received) can be carried forward and account for subsequent errors in your treatment. Ask the doctors or hospital to correct any errors before they harm you.

Medical errors are not rare. Be an active part of your treatment team to be sure you are a survivor, not a victim.

Trucking Country

Trucking Country

Trucking Country is a social history of long-haul trucking that explores the contentious politics of free-market capitalism in post-World War II America. Shane Hamilton paints an eye-opening portrait of the rural highways of the American heartland, and in doing so explains why working-class populist voters are drawn to conservative politicians who seemingly don’t represent their financial interests. Hamilton challenges the popular notion of “red state” conservatism as a devil’s bargain between culturally conservative rural workers and economically conservative demagogues in the Republican Party. The roots of rural conservatism, Hamilton demonstrates, took hold long before the culture wars and free-market fanaticism of the 1990s. As Hamilton shows, truckers helped build an economic order that brought low-priced consumer goods to a greater number of Americans. They piloted the big rigs that linked America’s factory farms and agribusiness food processors to suburban supermarkets across the country. Trucking Country is the gripping account of truckers whose support of post-New Deal free enterprise was so virulent that it sparked violent highway blockades in the 1970s. It’s the story of “bandit” drivers who inspired country songwriters and Hollywood filmmakers to celebrate the “last American cowboy,” and of ordinary blue-collar workers who helped make possible the deregulatory policies of Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan and set the stage for Wal-Mart to become America’s most powerful corporation in today’s low-price, low-wage economy.

Mike Pence Pick Hints At What Kind Of President Trump Would Be

CLEVELAND ― It’s a legitimate mystery what Donald Trump’s relationship with Capitol Hill would look like if he were to become president. But if his selection of Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate is any indication ― and Republicans seem to think it is ― Trump may be looking to work with the most ideologically extreme members of Congress.

The Pence pick certainly provides some insight into Trump’s overall electoral game plan. Instead of trying to considerably broaden his appeal with minorities or women, Trump seems to be doubling down on white, conservative men ― shoring up his already white and conservative base of men.

But more than a political maneuver, there’s a message to members of Congress in the Pence selection: This is the kind of legislator I want to work with.

Before Pence was governor of Indiana, he served 12 years in Congress as a bombastic member of the far-right. He consistently pushed GOP leaders to the right in rhetoric and in policy, even becoming a leader himself ― first as a chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee and then as the GOP Conference Chairman, the No. 3 spot among House Republicans.

On policy, Pence showed talent for finding divisive positions that often split Republicans and caused problems for GOP leadership. He was one of the leading voices in pushing congressional Republicans to offset emergency spending for Hurricane Katrina with cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, setting up a consistent battle line in Congress for other natural disasters.

His extreme fiscal positions often made other Republicans look less serious about tackling debt. In 2005, he co-sponsored a Social Security privatization bill that, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, would have forced entitlement cuts of roughly 30 percent.

He also advocated for ultra-conservative social positions. He tried for years to pass a constitutional amendment defining marriage as a bond between a man and a woman. He consistently tried to defund parts of Planned Parenthood. And he fought stem-cell research.

In many ways, Pence was a member of the divisive House Freedom Caucus before there ever was a House Freedom Caucus.

Trump has already shown a willingness to give the HFC special treatment. Paul Manafort, Trump’s campaign manager, met privately with Freedom Caucus board members ― with the addition of HFC member Scott DesJarlais (R-Tenn.), who was an early Trump supporter ― nearly a month ago for roughly 45 minutes to discuss their concerns and set up a meeting just between the conservative group and Trump.

While that meeting hasn’t taken place yet, it’s clear Trump sees conservatives like those in the Freedom Caucus as his natural allies. And choosing Pence to be his vice presidential nominee has already gone a long way toward solidifying support among HFC members, many of whom have shown reluctance over supporting Trump.

At least two HFC members, Reps. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) and Mark Sanford (R-S.C.), are included among the few Republicans in the House who openly oppose Trump. And many other members of the group have shown reservations about supporting the nominee.

But, just as intended, Trump’s VP selection is working to allay some concerns.

“Mike Pence is a good, honorable, experienced guy who has a very good understanding of the threat posed to America by our deficits and accumulated debt,” Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) told The Huffington Post this week. “Mike Pence is a valuable addition to the ticket.”

Brooks notes his public position is that he’ll support all Republicans on the ticket in November, but he’s repeatedly expressed anxiety over supporting a person with such whimsical political positions.

Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.) also told HuffPost that while he was already supporting Trump, the Pence pick helped with that decision.

“Having served with Pence and knowing him, as well as following his career for years, I believe he is a great fit for Donald Trump,” Duncan said. “In addition to his conservative voting record, he brings strong social conservative credentials to the Trump team.”

Still, Trump’s problems with some conservatives run deeper than just a few questions about the candidate’s social conservatism.

HFC board member Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) told HuffPost this week that while he was supporting the Republican nominee, he still had some issues with Trump.

“Really my concerns are probably more on the balance between Congress and the executive branch,” Meadows said. “And so to the extent that Mike Pence can help a new administration understand the importance of that balance? Certainly.”

“But in terms of credentials,” Meadows continued, “whether they be social conservative or fiscal conservative credentials, not as much.”

There’s of course a risk in reading too much into what Trump does. He could, at any moment and for any reason, reverse himself on anything. And conservative lawmakers, many of whom have experience in opposing members of their own party, seem suspicious of a nominee with such mutable ideology.

Pence would seem to offer Trump a steady Republican ideology. But his own ambition has already shown Republicans that he’s mutable too. (Pence famously called Trump’s Muslim ban “offensive and unconstitutional.” Now, he’s not only on the same ticket with Trump; he’s also reversing course on that position.)

Still, for conservatives inside and outside of Congress, Pence is an indication that Trump fashions himself a true conservative. And for Republicans looking to enact a far-right agenda, Trump’s new identity as a far-right conservative is a good sign.

Are Your Beliefs Ruining Your Relationships?

2016-07-20-1469044584-9565659-www.lindsayrobin.com.png

Grab a partner and give this a try. Stand facing your partner, holding your hands up and pressed against each other’s’. Now, both of you push against the other’s hands.

What happens? Do you feel tension? Does one of you lose your footing? Does one of you ‘win’?

Now stop. This time one of you will push and the other will ‘absorb’. How is this different? How does the relationship shift?

Let’s take a look at this from the outside. During our lifetime, we find ourselves in a lot of relationships- parental, sibling, romantic, friendship, etc. In these relationships, we are bound to have conflicts pop up- moments where there is tension, where both of us are pushing and we all of a sudden feel triggered to react.

But most of us never stop to look at what we are actually reacting TO.

The short answer?

Our beliefs.

When we ease up, allow flexibility and hold the space for another to have their own experience- yes, even push at you at times- without pushing back, we allow them greater flexibility to change their experience. When we remain rigid, holding fast to our perspective, our beliefs, the tension increases, and incidentally this is also when people tend to act in regrettable ways because they are acting from subconscious fight-or-flight patterns instead of their hearts.

Early in life, especially as we start to experience what it is like to understand that we are separate from others (especially our mother), we develop beliefs and often supporting habits that become the ‘things’ we need to do in order to keep love intact. When we are babies, we can lie there and poop in our diapers and we are loved just as much as if we are clean and cooing. We are unconditionally loved.

As we get older, more autonomous and have more awareness around our separateness, we start to develop empowering or disempowering beliefs related to our understanding of how we can be separate from others and still belong or how we can be loved for simply being ourselves- the things we need to do, or the person we need to be in order to be loved and lovable.

Many of us become bogged down in ‘shoulds’ based on others’ expectations, or our (mistaken) perceived understanding of others’ expectations. These ‘shoulds’ are the rules by which we must abide if we want to be loved and lovable, and belong in a given group (family, relationship, etc.).

Think about your parents. Whose attention do you most crave? What life-long patterns have you created in an attempt to acquire that attention? Patterns of achievement (sometimes over-achievement), personality traits (happy, agreeable), characteristics (this is common for people who struggle to lose weight) are some of the different ways we alter our natural state in an attempt to please or ‘belong’ with that parent and in the world. Take note: this is a sub-conscious process that was established early in life, so don’t expect it to be something you think you believe, but rather a rule that you unknowingly or subconsciously abide by.

These become the contracts with others and with ourselves that we live the rest of our lives through, unless we take the time to notice them and ask ourselves if we are being authentic, if these beliefs are true, and if they are still serving our best interest.

I recently watched a Tony Robbins video where he was talking about his relationship with his son and how he kept trying to ‘teach’ his son about work ethic, worrying that he didn’t understand how important it was or that he didn’t have any. His son, in turn, kept pushing back.

However, there was a shifting point in their relationship where Tony wondered why this pattern persisted despite his best efforts to ‘convince’ his son, and realized that perhaps there was also a lesson in there for himself that was being missed.

He sat his son down, apologized, and asked his son to teach him how to ‘chill’ (which his son was masterful at, but Tony not so much). It turned out to be a great opportunity for Tony to learn how to be more present with his family, his children and wife benefitted, and I can only imagine that his body thanked him.

In return? Through apologizing, which removed the weight of guilt and shame around his son’s natural abilities, his son reacted with a strengthened work ethic- on his own terms.

Now, I don’t mean to imply that removing the judgement and pressure will always result in the very thing you were trying to instill in the first place because that just isn’t the case. In this instance, I think that when people get connected to their own inner desire to make a difference in the world and be their best self and the need to resist that is removed, they will inherently become a master of their own work ethic (the balance of which can vary from person to person).

Sometimes the traits you are trying to instill simply aren’t a part of their journey or look different than you might expect them to.

Coming to terms within yourself is just as much a part of that journey

And within this interaction is also a gift for you. Every conflict always has a learning opportunity for everyone involved- you just have to find it. For Tony, the turning point was when he realized that his relationship with his son was two-way. It wasn’t just him passing down everything he knows to his son, but there were actually lessons to be received in this relationship as well.

We are on this journey together to learn and grow from each other. The mistaken notion that the parent knows it all and is teaching their child how to do everything ‘right’ is outdated and limiting. If we want to collectively make the world a better place, increase the love and feel more connected to our children, we need to be open to all the lessons life has to offer, including those received from our own children (or the children in our lives).

The skill of being able to notice when we are getting worked up, look inward and ask ourselves- what is the lesson here for me- is invaluable. When we can identify what rules the other person is breaking in our internal collection of ‘shoulds’, we can learn a valuable lesson from the other person which in turn calls back more of our ‘wholeness’.

The very best gift you can give to others is permission to be their truest self, the space to explore that and the reminder that you love them regardless of how it looks or whether you understand it.

Walmart Unveils New Lines Of Ugly Apples And Potatoes

Walmart has started to see the beauty in ugly produce.

The nation’s largest grocer announced a new initiative on Tuesday to sell “ugly” apples in 300 Florida stores, according to a blog from the company. Beginning in May, the company also started selling misshapen potatoes that would have otherwise been wasted in and around Texas.

These are the first initiatives from the company to sell produce specifically branded as ugly or imperfect on its packaging in the U.S, Walmart spokesperson John Forrest Ales told HuffPost.

“What’s different now is that we’re having potatoes and apples of this grade on the shelf with the branding,” Ales said. “This is the first time the suppliers have come up with brands that are related to selling ugly produce.”

Ales says Walmart has been selling “so-called ugly produce” for years ― putting imperfectly sized avocados and corn, or over-ripe Roma tomatoes, on shelves. He also said a certain amount of sales of over- or under-sized produce is “pretty common across the grocery industry.”

But food activists say they are looking for more radical changes from major grocery chains, such as large-scale programs to sell ugly produce and educate customers.

Food waste is a serious problem in the U.S.: Up to 40 percent of food in the U.S. goes uneaten, according to a study from the Natural Resources Defense Council. Some of the food is composted or turned into animal feed, but most of it winds up in landfills, according to the organization.

A significant contributor to the problem is grocery chains rejecting produce because it does not meet standards for ideal size, shape or appearance, according to the U.N’s Food and Agriculture Organization.

In the U.S., as much as 30 percent of all apples and pears grown “don’t make the cut” for cosmetic reasons, according to Walmart’s blog.

A recent study from the Guardian paints even starker numbers: half of all produce grown in the U.S. may be discarded because it’s bruised, misshapen, oddly sized or has some other non-threatening deformity.

Walmart’s new initiatives will make some strides against food waste by bringing potatoes that are “less than perfect” to more than 400 stores across Texas and nearby states, and “ugly apples” to around 300 stores in Florida.

Both items will be sold to customers in bundles at a lower price per pound than traditional potatoes or apples would be, according to Ales.

While the two initiatives are a step in the right direction for Walmart, activists ― and consumers ― say they want to see more from the nation’s largest grocer.

On Wednesday, food waste activist Jordan Figueiredo hand-delivered a petition to Walmart with more than 143,000 signatures demanding that the grocery chain do more to combat the country’s food waste crisis.

The Huffington Post has been supporting the effort since the launch of its Reclaim editorial campaign.

“If produce fails to make the grade for size, shape, or color, retailers deem it ‘ugly’ and refuse to sell it in their stores,” the petition reads. “Tell [Walmart] to add the ‘uglies’ to their store aisles so you can save money, fight hunger and help the environment all in one.”

Walmart’s stores in the U.K. have made more progress than those in the U.S. to sell ugly produce.

Asda, Walmart’s U.K. grocery chain, began selling boxes of “wonky” vegetables earlier this year, for about 30 percent off regular prices. The program proved so successful, the company expanded the offer from 250 to 550 stores in March.

Now activists in the United States are hoping Walmart will do the same in the U.S., selling ugly vegetables in its more than 5,000 stores nationwide.

Ales said the ability to sell ugly produce isn’t entirely in Walmart’s hands, as the amount of ugly produce growers have available can be dependent on external factors like the weather.

There are a number of factors that impact whether a harvest yields so-called ‘ugly’ produce, including Mother Nature,” Ales said. “When this type of produce is available, we look for ways to provide value for our customers and a return for growers.”

But activists say that weather-affected produce only represent a fraction of the total amount of cosmetically imperfect produce rejected by grocery stores.

“While this is another good step, it’s still just a couple items,” Figueiredo told the Huffington Post via email. “[Walmart’s ugly potatoes and apples] are also weather-blemished, which is not consistently happening like most ‘ugly’ produce is: Weather blemished is a one-off thing that happens here and there.”

What the activists are looking for, according to Figueiredo, is a large-scale program selling all types of ‘ugly’ produce ― too small, too large, misshapen, off-color ― derived from the “massive amount of produce” going to waste on farms due to cosmetic standards. They point to what Walmart has done in the U.K., with its Wonky Veg Box, as a good example.

But Ales says Walmart has no national plans to sell ugly produce in the U.S:

“We don’t have any current nationwide plans at this time,” Ales told The Huffington Post. “We do not have specific goals for ugly produce. We’re watching ASDA closely, we brought these two initiatives forward and are continuing to look at new possibilities. There’s always more we can be doing.”

Only I, The RNC Teleprompter Operator, Can Cheer Up Chris Christie

My job is easy. They give me some words, I type them into a machine, and they come out displayed in large font for a speaker to read at his or her preferred talking speed.

Every now and then, however, I’ll go rogue.

I only do it when it’s absolutely necessary — when I know someone needs me. Tuesday night, my mission is to bring some light to the life of a man who otherwise might never smile again: Governor Chris Christie.

After selling out and backing Trump for president, Christie was betrayed when Indiana Governor Mike Pence was chosen as Trump’s running mate. Poor Chris is now about to deliver a speech at the Republican National Convention with the desperate hope that Trump might pick him for a cabinet position. In the words of Donald Trump, “Sad!”

I’m not going to let Chris do this to himself! He is a respectable, dignified leader who just needs a little motivation. So I’m replacing the copy of his speech with inspirational messages that will hopefully deliver an ounce of happiness to the pathetic life of this sad, sad man.

How To Collaborate Like Todd Snyder, Rising King Of American Menswear

He’s the once and future king of American menswear. But unless you’re obsessed with Instagram’s growing brotherhood of style bloggers who wear his clothes, you might not know Todd Snyder’s name today ― a fact that he’s OK with (for now) and he’ll be the first to admit that he’s not an American household name … yet.

But after designing outerwear at Polo Ralph Lauren, working as the director of menswear at The Gap and then as senior vice president of menswear at J.Crew (where he launched the Ludlow suit and its NYC-destination menswear shop The Liquor Store), he left J.Crew to launch his eponymous label. Snyder has been “The Next Big Thing” for so long that it feels like Snyder (a Dutch surname that, as it happens, means “tailor”) is finally getting the respect, attention and success that he deserves.

In 2012, Snyder, who cites military, Savile Row and classic American style as big inspiration, was GQ’s Best New Designer in America. A year later, he was a finalist for the Council of Fashion Designers of America/Vogue Fashion Fund. Last year, American Eagle announced (to some surprise) that it had acquired the Todd Snyder label, as well as Snyder’s lesser-known brand, Tailgate, for $ 11 million.

He told HuffPost that he plans to open a Todd Snyder shop in Manhattan (his first brick and mortar in the US) that will feature, among other things, a barber shop, tailor shop and bar, in the hopes of bringing the success he’s found in his Japanese locations to his home base in the U.S.

A big reason for all of this success, though slow-simmering, is due to his ability to recognize partnerships where others would see competition. Snyder has designed product with brands that share both aesthetics and customers: PF Flyers, Champion, Superior bags, Moscot and Cole Haan. His most recent collaboration with Timex sold out within its first day.

We spoke with Snyder in his Manhattan studio to learn about why he collaborates so much when he could just do for himself what other brands are doing, to learn his secrets.

Associate Yourself With Those Who Inspire You.

“What attracted me to Timex was the heritage,” Snyder said. “When I think of iconic American brands, it’s Levis, Champion, Timex, Redwing. Those are the things that, to me are like OK, that says they’ve stood the test of time. They’re still doing today what they were doing when they started, which is making really great quality design.”

Your Competitor Can Become Your Mentor.

“It’s also the ability to sit across from [a brand like] Timex, where within the entire company, there’s a lot of really smart people. They’re talking about marketing and different ways of getting the word out and I’m like, how do you do that? They deal with mega companies, the Targets of the world. Everybody. To be able to sit across from people in that company who have this knowledge is, for me, so exciting because then I learn from that.”

Respect Your Partner’s History. It’s Why You Want To Work With Them.

“To be able to work with companies like those is a dream come true, but my approach is to go in with respect to the heritage and what they’ve built,” Snyder said. “I don’t want to change it, I just want to add a little twist to it and really pay tribute to it, as opposed to starting over. Because to me, that’s not what it’s about ― it’s about taking something they’ve done and adding slight twists to it so it kind of makes it my own, but at the same time doesn’t destroy what they’ve started. And having that appreciation goes a long way so they can trust me. It’s a trust factor.”

Know That Ultimately, What You Make Together Is More Meaningful Than The Sum Of Its Parts.

I don’t think I could ever make a watch better than Timex, and if I did I don’t think it would have as much meaning as something like this,” Snyder said. “Because that’s what people appreciate; you fall in love with the design and you might not know that it was made originally in 1970 but you start to read the backstory on the watch and how it was started and the story about how it was designed, and you fall in love with that story as well. And I think that’s what guys really appreciate. There’s more substance to it rather than just a piece of metal that’s on your wrist.”

15, 30, 50, 70… Which SPF Should I Use?

By GalTime.com

Seems like you need a PhD in SPF these days to understand what’s on the label of most sunscreens. And believe you me, you want to make sure you have the right sunscreen slathered on your body before you hit the beach!

Non-melanoma skin cancer is now the most common type of cancer in America. More than 3.5 million cases are reported annually… and that’s just the reported cases. Many patients are treated in the doctor’s office and a good number of those aren’t included in the count. That’s why the Archives of Dermatology recently called non-melanoma skin cancer an “under-recognized epidemic” in the U.S.

Of course, the number one way to prevent skin cancer is to stay out of the sun (especially during peak sun hours) or cover yourself from head to toe even in 90 degree weather! But how many people can do that? Enter sunscreen. The right kind not only blocks dangerous rays, but also helps block the anti-aging effects of the sun (think fewer wrinkles!). But, it’s critical to use the right level of protection.

There are products on the shelves with SPFs ranging from zero to 70 now-a-days. Do you have any idea what the numbers really mean?

How much more protection does a 30 SPF offer than a 15? If you guessed twice as much, you’re wrong. An SPF of 15 screens 93 percent of UVB rays, while a 30 screens 97 — just four percent more. “UVB protection does not increase proportionally with the SPF number,” says Dr. Elizabeth Hale of the Skin Cancer Foundation. There’s a large jump between an SPF of 2, which protects against 50 percent of UVB rays, and 15, but after that the increments are small.

Leading dermatologists say a 15 should do the trick day-to-day for most people.

“This would be for casual wear, you’re going to and from your car, you’re putting out the garbage, you’re picking up the kids at the bus stop, says Dr. Zoe Draelos. If you’re going to be outside for a prolonged period of time, experts recommend an SPF 30 minimum. You’ve also got to use the right amount of sunscreen or else the effective SPF might be far less than what’s on the bottle.

How much sunscreen should you use?

You’ve probably heard people say use an amount the size of a quarter. Wrong! You’re supposed to use a shot glass full of sunscreen on all exposed areas to get the full benefit.

And here’s something else you probably don’t know. SPF only refers to UVB rays. There is no ratings scale for UVA protection. So look for the words “Broad Spectrum” on the label and specific ingredients according to “The most important is avobenzone and two other ingredients titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.”

If you’re sensitive to the sun, are taking medications that make you more sensitive to the sun or have had skin cancer in the past, dermatologist recommend you use an SPF 50.

Another tip: Don’t forget the UV-blocking sunglasses!

He’s Not A White Knight — He’s A Human Being

Society says:

Men are not allowed to be weak.

Men do not feel as deeply as women.

Men do not have emotional attachments to sex.

Men are fearless and courageous.

Men are here to save the day, the damsel and the world!

Today I am throwing my hands up in the air and saying e-nough!

With thoughts and stigmas like this, relationships are doomed before they even start.
It’s time we put an end to the emotional imprisonment of men.

Unless we stop seeing our men through a distorted lens, we will always feel disappointed and as if he’s not enough.

Ladies, he’s not a White Knight, he’s a human being. He’s not perfect; he’s flawed. Just as we are.

As much as the big screen likes to repeatedly demonstrate the amazing, enlightened, self-aware man rescuing the damsel at just the perfect moment, it’s a rare occurrence in real life.

For Pete’s sake, Ladies, we have to stop this nonsensical belief once and for all.

Gender Differences – Real or Not Real

There are very few gender lines I allow into my beliefs and the ones I do are mostly hormone or physiologically based. There are many books out there claiming males and females are very different and we must understand one another in order to get along.

I am publicly willing to stand in disagreement with this for many reasons. (But that’s for another blog)

At the core level, the absolute deepest level of our being, we are souls. Souls that are a magnificent balance of masculine and feminine energies. Souls that came here to experience a physical body and the material world. At our very core, we are Spirit in human form.

All of us.

We may have chosen to experience the form of male or female, but our purpose for being here is the same. We are no different from one another. We are here to learn and grow closer to our Higher Self (God-Self) while existing in human form.

When we understand we are dealing with another soul housed in a male body, we can acquire a deeper understanding and appreciation for our partner that has the capacity to heal our fractured relationships.

Giving What You Are Expecting

I absolutely believe if we lose the White Knight stigma we’ve attached to our men and start looking at them from a new perspective, relationships en masse would dramatically improve!

Although I cannot speak to all relationships as there are too many individual and unique dynamics in play, I believe those of you who were drawn to this article possess the ability to alter the state of your partnerships by viewing your man through a clearer lens.

You can start by asking yourself this question:

Am I giving to my man what I am expecting from him?

If I’ve seen it once, I’ve seen it a hundred times. Women expecting to be nurtured, supported, caressed, complimented, made passionate love to (and the list goes on), but they’re unwilling to do those things for their man.

Somewhere along the way they chose to believe it’s the man’s job, not theirs.

By putting such lopsided expectations are on our men, we create an atmosphere of perpetual lack and resentment.

Frankly, you are putting the entire relationship in the hands of your partner and by golly, that’s an incredible burden for anyone to bear!

Ladies, he can show up for you. He can hold your hand. He can love you and respect you, but you have an equally important role in the relationship’s success.

No one person can nurture the relationship alone. Happy, healthy relationships require both parties equally contributing to the healing and becoming of their partner.

What He’s Not Saying

In my past, I had the belief that the man was supposed to fill the cracks of my broken heart. That my heart was the only fragile one in the room and the right man would know exactly how to make me feel safe and loved.

I was left disappointed every time until one day I looked deeper into the eyes and soul of the person I was putting my expectations on.

I discovered he was just as afraid as I was and his heart equally as fragile.

My entire life changed when I began to view men from a different perspective.

I started to see what the men in my life were not saying rather than what they were saying. I saw their fears and I heard their inaudible cries for love. I didn’t tell them what I saw, I simply began approaching interactions with them differently – with love rather than expectation.

The responses that came were remarkable. Softness replaced hardness. Kindness replaced anger. Gratitude replaced bitterness. Appreciation replaced expectation.

It was a miracle.

Your man needs your love, attention, support, understanding and encouragement as much as you need it from him. He has his own store of false beliefs and fears just as you do. He is not exempt from the human experience just because he sports a penis.

Most men won’t display their needs openly as they have been taught not to.

It’s up to us to know that as human beings men experience the same emotions, fears and weaknesses as women do. If we want to experience the wonders of a reciprocally loving relationship, we need to step up and do our part.

And with this beautiful shift in perception, you will become the person he’s always needed in his life – his soft place to fall. You will become his trusted companion, the one who knows and understands him like no other.

2016-07-18-1468873812-2537940-whiteknight1.PNG

You will be the reason he becomes all that he is meant to be and the reason he will protect his kingdom at all costs.

He will become the White Knight you’ve always dreamed about simply because you love him for all that he is.
